Buying a used car as a foreigner — did your insurance history count for anything?

We're buying our first car in Australia, a used one, after a year of renting and borrowing. The car itself is fine. The insurance is the problem. My no-claims history from Pakistan counts for nothing here, it seems, so our quotes are as if I'd never driven in my life, after twenty years without an accident.

Did anyone manage to get their driving or insurance history from home recognised? Or did you just accept the new-driver price for a year?

Some insurers do accept a letter from your previous insurer, in English and stating your claim-free years, even if it's not automatic, so it's worth asking each one directly rather than relying on the online quote. The Insurance section of each guide covers what to ask, for example the Insurance section for Australia.
