Frequently asked questions
Is ExpatStarterGuide free?
Yes. The core features — personalised checklist, country profile, currency guide, daily life essentials, emergency numbers, pets guide, public holidays, and transport guide — are completely free with no account required. Premium sections unlock with a single one-time €19 supporter contribution that covers every country.
Is the €19 a subscription?
No. It is a one-time supporter contribution. Support once, and the 12 premium sections unlock for every country, forever. There are no subscriptions, no recurring fees, and no hidden costs.
Can I get a refund?
Because access is granted immediately via a single-use activation code, contributions are non-refundable. Please use the free sections to verify the quality before supporting.
Do I need to create an account to use ExpatStarterGuide?
No account is needed to start. You can complete the personalised wizard and browse all free content without signing up. An account is only required to save your progress, track your checklist, and redeem your activation code to unlock premium sections.
Which countries are available?
ExpatStarterGuide currently covers 120 countries worldwide, including popular expat destinations such as Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, the UAE, Canada, Australia, and many more. New countries are added regularly, and your supporter contribution unlocks all of them.
How does the personalised checklist work?
The personalised wizard asks you a few questions about your background, family situation, destination, and move timeline. Based on your answers, it generates a tailored task checklist with deadlines specific to your situation — so you only see the steps that are actually relevant to you.
Does the contribution unlock every country?
Yes. There is no per-country purchase. A single €19 contribution unlocks the 12 premium sections for every country on the site, for your account, permanently — including countries added in the future.
What payment methods are accepted?
Contributions are handled securely by Ko-fi, which accepts major credit and debit cards and PayPal. After you tip, we email a single-use activation code to your Ko-fi email address — paste it on the Support page to unlock premium access.
How is ExpatStarterGuide different from free resources online?
Generic blog posts and government websites give you information — ExpatStarterGuide gives you a personalised action plan. The checklist is tailored to your specific circumstances, the content is organised by category and deadline, and everything is in one place rather than scattered across dozens of tabs. The premium sections go deep into areas like taxes, visa rules, job permits, citizenship, and pet relocation that are rarely covered in free resources.
Is my personal data secure?
Yes. ExpatStarterGuide uses Supabase for secure data storage with row-level security, and Ko-fi for payment processing — your card details are never stored on our servers. You can delete your account and all associated data at any time from your profile settings.
