Child benefits as a newcomer — did you qualify straight away?

We've been in the Netherlands for a few months now and I finally sat down to sort out child benefit. Some friends here told me we'd get it straight away, others said there's a waiting period, and one said newcomers usually get it only for part of the first year. The official page is clear on the general rules, but I'm not sure how they apply to us, because my husband's work contract started before the rest of the family arrived.

Did you qualify for child benefits as soon as you arrived? Did anything about your situation (a partner arriving later, a job starting before the move, kids joining later) change the outcome? And how long did it take from applying to the first payment?

Portugal needed my son's registration at the health centre and school first, then the social security registration, and only then the application. Each step needed the previous one. Map the order before you start and it's easy. Do it in the wrong order and you'll be at the same desk three times, like I was.

UK: the form was simple, the wait was a few weeks, and nobody told us to apply until a friend mentioned it at a barbecue. Ask around.

Arjun, as far as I understood it, what matters is that you file for the year you became a resident, whatever the month. Check the official page for newcomers, it explains it better than I can.

Called them. It depends on the quarter we all registered in, which means we'll miss part of the first one, as some friends said. At least now I know, and the application is in.
