International school waitlists — how far ahead did you actually need to apply?

We're still a few months out from moving and I keep hearing that the good international schools have serious waitlists, to the point where people are applying almost before they've accepted the job offer. Is that genuinely necessary, or is it exaggerated?

Not exaggerated, unfortunately, at least for the well-regarded schools in major cities — some genuinely do fill up months in advance, especially for the more sought-after year groups. The safe pattern is: apply the moment you have a confirmed move, don't wait for your own visa/housing to be finalised first, since school admissions often move on their own separate timeline entirely.

The Family & Education section of your destination's guide usually names the well-known schools and roughly when their application windows open — worth checking before you assume you have more time than you do.

We applied before we’d even formally accepted the job offer, on a friend’s tip. In hindsight, very glad we did — the wait was longer than we expected even having started early.

We waited and genuinely regretted it — ended up on three different waitlists simultaneously trying to catch up.

Worth checking your specific school and city rather than assuming this is universal — one of the schools we looked at had immediate availability while the “popular” one nearby had a year-long wait.

Did anyone get anywhere by explaining the timeline pressure directly to the school, or does that never actually move things along?

Following, month two of waiting and getting nervous.

Checked the guide’s documents section like Jimmy suggested above — turned out useful for the enrolment paperwork side of this too, not just the visa side.
