Getting kids into school mid-year — how did enrolment actually work?

We're moving in the middle of the school year and I'm anxious about the kids just… not having a school for weeks. For those who've done a mid-year move, how did enrolment go and what should I be doing now?

Apply the moment you have an address — mid-year places do exist but you have to chase them, they won't come to you. Ring the schools directly rather than waiting on a portal.

Catchment/zoning rules meant our address literally determined which school our kids could attend — check that before you sign a lease, or you can accidentally rule out the school you wanted.

The enrolment document list was long — translated birth certificate, vaccination records, previous school reports. Start gathering now; it's the pack that slows people down.

Once we got an actual human at the school on the phone, everything moved. The office staff knew the real process far better than anything I read online.

"Ring directly, gather the doc pack now, mind the catchment before the lease." That's my plan. Thank you — I feel far less panicked.
