Did moving abroad change your relationship with family back home?

Something I've been thinking about since my trip home in July. Before I moved, I saw my family every Sunday and we talked about nothing. Now I see them once or twice a year and we talk about everything, because the time is limited and everyone knows it.

Some relationships got better. My brother and I were never close, and now we have a running voice-note conversation that's basically our own podcast. Others got harder. My mum still gets quiet when I talk about my life here, like every good thing I mention is a vote against home. I missed my cousin's wedding in May and I'm still not sure she's forgiven me.

For those a few years in: did moving change how you relate to your family? Did it settle, or do you just get used to the new shape?

Brazilian here too, so the time difference is small but some days it might as well be huge. I'm closer to my dad now, weirdly, because we actually schedule calls instead of half-listening to each other over Sunday lunch.

For us it is complicated because part of the family is still in Ukraine. The calls became more important and also shorter, sometimes only "we are fine, are you fine". I am closer to my mother than ever, and further from some relatives who did not understand why we left. Both happened at the same time.

@Olena Kravchenko thank you for sharing that. "Closer and further at the same time" says it better than anything I wrote.

Our kids speak to their grandparents over video more than they ever saw them in person back home, because of the traffic and the distances. My mother says it's the best thing about us leaving, which I choose to take as a compliment.

From the grandparent side: our relationship with our daughter changed more than the one with the grandchildren. She tells us less of the small stuff now, because by the time she'd explain it on a video call it's already solved. I miss being part of the boring middle of her week.

It changed the balance with my siblings. I'm the one who left, so looking after our parents falls more on them, and I feel that in every call even when nobody says it.

Rajesh, same. I send money and they give time, and neither side thinks it's a fair trade.
