Welcome โ€” glad you're here

Whether you're three months out from a move or you landed yesterday and everything feels like a lot at once โ€” this is the place to ask the questions you can't quite find a clean answer to anywhere else.

A few things worth knowing before you dive in:

  • Start with your personalized checklist. If you've completed the onboarding wizard, your dashboard already has a checklist scoped to your destination, nationality and situation โ€” that's the fastest way to see what actually applies to you, not a generic list.
  • This forum is for the messy, real-world stuff. The country guides are great for "what's the process" โ€” this is where you get "okay but what was it actually like", timing quirks, and the small things nobody warns you about.
  • Numbers change โ€” guides don't go stale, forum posts can. When someone (including me) mentions a fee or a deadline here, always double-check it against the relevant country guide before you rely on it. We keep those updated; a comment thread from months ago might not be.

A good way to start: introduce yourself below โ€” where you're moving from, where you're headed, and what's stressing you out most right now. I read every thread, and there's a good chance someone here has been through exactly what you're dealing with.

Looking forward to it. โ€” Jimmy

Evening all. Ben here, retired civil servant, and my wife Sue and I moved to Portugal's Silver Coast about a year ago after thirty-odd years of talking about it. Mostly lurking to pick up tips for the winter, which I'm told is not as sunny as the brochures suggested. Happy to share what I can on the pension and residency paperwork, since I've now filled in more forms in Portuguese than I ever did at work.

Welcome Ben, another retired couple here, in Spain. The winter comment made me smile. You'll find out soon enough, and then you'll be the one writing about curtains.

Assalam o alaikum and hello from Canberra. Civil engineer, moved from Lahore about fourteen months ago with my wife and our three kids (4, 8 and 11). The first year was mostly logistics. Now we're in the part where you actually build a life, which is much harder to make a checklist for. If anyone is heading to Australia on the skilled route, ask away, I remember how confusing the order of things was.

Hello everyone. I am Olena, a pharmacist from Kharkiv, now living in Cork with my partner and our daughter. My biggest project at the moment is getting my qualification recognised so I can work as a pharmacist again and not only as an assistant. If anyone else is going through professional recognition in Ireland, I would be glad to compare notes.

Olena, welcome! Also in Ireland, also doing a lot of the paperwork alone some weeks. The recognition side is slow but people do get there, so shout if you need a sounding board.

Hey everyone! Joy here, from the Philippines. Three years in Calgary as a caregiver and now studying nursing part-time, which means my social life is mostly flashcards right now. Moving here alone was the bravest and scariest thing I've done, so if you're doing it solo, I'm cheering for you.

Good evening from Manchester. Nurse from Enugu, eight months into my first UK job, and my wife joins me later this year once her visa comes through. Still getting used to the weather and everyone's very strong opinions about tea.

Chinedu, the tea opinions never stop, you just pick a side eventually. Welcome!

Hej from Uppsala. I'm a postdoc from Tehran, about eight months in Sweden now. I came alone and the first winter was a lot, so I've been reading every thread here about loneliness and daylight with great interest. I recently adopted a cat, which has done more for my mood than the lamp I bought.

Really glad to see so many new faces here this month. Welcome Ben, Tariq, Olena, Joy, Chinedu and Leila.

A small tip for everyone who joined recently: there are a few new categories (Planning Your Move, Paperwork & Local Admin, Driving & Transport, Students & Study Abroad, and Returning Home & Moving On), so if your question doesn't fit the older ones, one of those probably does. And if a guide section is missing something you needed, tell me. That feedback goes straight into the next update.
