The unexpectedly emotional moment that made it feel real

Mine was getting a joke in the local language — not just understanding it, actually finding it funny in real time without translating first. Tiny thing, hit me harder than the residency permit ever did.

My toddler said a full sentence in the local language for the first time and I nearly cried in the middle of the playground. Not something I saw coming.

Following, hasn’t happened for me yet and now I’m curious what mine will end up being.

Getting invited to something specifically because someone assumed I already knew about it, like an insider rather than a guest. Realised afterwards how much that meant.

A colleague vented to me about something completely mundane, the way you only do with someone you consider a peer rather than a visitor. Didn’t register as significant until later that evening.

Ours was our neighbour, a widow in her eighties who speaks no English at all, knocking on the door to ask if we'd water her tomatoes while she visited her sister. She handed Sue a key on a bit of string and a very long list of instructions we understood about half of. Nothing about the visa or the house purchase felt like arriving. Being trusted with that key did. The tomatoes survived, by the way, which I consider my greatest achievement in Portugal so far.

Another mum at school asked if she could put me down as her emergency contact. I said yes very calmly and then sat in the car for a minute before driving home.

Ben, the key on a string got me. There's something about being trusted with someone's actual house that no permit can do.

A patient's daughter stopped me in the supermarket to thank me for looking after her dad on a night shift. She remembered my name. I'd been feeling like a stranger in this city for months and suddenly I was somebody's nurse.
