Emergency numbers and what actually happens if you call — worth knowing early

I realised in a slightly scary moment that I didn't even know the right number to call, let alone what would happen or whether I'd be understood. Thankfully it was minor. But it made me think everyone should sort this in week one. What's the emergency setup where you are, and is there an English option?

UAE: I called once for a colleague who fainted in a heatwave. Answered in English immediately, ambulance in minutes. Kwame, glad yours was minor.

In Ireland both the European number and the local one worked when I tested which one to save. I saved both.

Really good thing to sort in week one, and thanks for starting the thread, Kwame. Every country guide has an Emergency section with the numbers for police, ambulance and fire, whether English is usually available, and what to expect when you call. For example, here's the Emergency section for the UAE. Save the numbers in your phone today, and teach the kids the main one too.
