How did you find an English-speaking doctor in a new country?

My language skills are fine for daily life but I do not trust myself to accurately describe symptoms in a medical context. How did people here find doctors they could actually communicate with properly?

Found mine through a recommendation thread in a local expat Facebook group — worked well, and I trust it more than a random directory search.

Good instinct not to risk it with symptoms specifically. Beyond community recommendations, some countries maintain an official directory of English-speaking (or multilingual) practitioners — worth checking whether your destination has one via the Health section of the country guide before relying purely on word of mouth.

My insurance provider actually had an English-speaking-doctor filter built into their directory — worth checking that before assuming you have to search blind.

Does anyone keep a translator app loaded as backup even with an English-speaking doctor, for the trickier medical vocabulary specifically?

Yes, I keep one loaded just in case — needed it twice now for very specific terms neither of us quite had in the other’s language.

Adding this to my to-do list before I actually need it, thank you.
