Getting a referral to a specialist — the system confused me

Learned to be very specific and a bit more persistent with the GP about symptoms rather than downplaying things, which sped up the referral noticeably.

The gatekeeping system caught me out too, almost exactly the same experience.

Paid for a one-off private consultation to skip the queue for something time-sensitive in my case — not something I’d do routinely, but useful to know it’s an option.

Is there a way to know in advance which conditions genuinely need the GP-first route versus ones you can go around directly?

Not that I’ve found, honestly — mostly trial and error unfortunately.

At my age I see more doctors than I'd like, so I've had some practice with this. What helped me was writing a short list before each GP appointment: what the problem is, how long it's been going on, what I've tried, and what I'm worried it might be. The GP seemed much more willing to refer when I was clear rather than apologetic. The first time I downplayed everything out of politeness, and I got sent home with advice to rest.

Chris's list is exactly what I do now. It helps with the language too, because I've already found the words.
