Every apartment listing I like wants a local guarantor, which is obviously a problem when you've been in the country for two weeks and know precisely nobody. Is there an actual workaround for this, or am I stuck only looking at the small subset of listings that don't ask for one?
Tomasz — looked into that myself, at least where I am it wasn’t restricted to students specifically, worth checking locally.
In France there's a state-backed guarantee that some young people and new employees can use instead of a personal guarantor. It saved me when I moved out of student housing, because I had a job contract but no French parent to sign for me. Check whether your country has anything similar, because in my case even the agents didn't mention it until I asked.
My employer's relocation agency wrote a letter confirming my contract and salary. Half the landlords accepted that instead of a guarantor, which was half more than I expected.
Worth asking the employer, always.
