First payslip shock — the deductions nobody explained

First full month in the new job in Sweden and I've just spent an evening with the payslip and a translation app. The gross salary matches the contract. The net is a lot lower than the calculator I used before accepting the offer.

Some of it I understand: income tax, obviously. But there's a municipal part that's higher than I'd guessed, and a union fee I apparently agreed to on my first day while signing twenty other things. There's also a line I still can't identify.

Did your first payslip surprise you? Which deductions did nobody explain, and is there anything I should check now rather than in a year?

Church tax is the surprise for many people in Germany. It applies if you're registered as a member of certain churches. Some colleagues ticked a box on the registration form without realising what it meant. Check what you declared at registration, because it follows you onto the payslip.

From the employer side: ask payroll to walk you through the payslip line by line. Every small company I know is happy to do it, and it takes ten minutes. The line you can't identify is usually something boring, like a pension contribution or insurance, but it's worth knowing which one, because some are optional and some are not.

Pension contribution, in my case, that I didn't know I'd been enrolled in. Not a bad thing, but worth knowing about.

My first month in Ireland I was taxed at a much higher rate because my tax registration wasn't finished. It was corrected later, but check that your tax details are registered properly now.

Rajesh's suggestion worked. Payroll explained everything in ten minutes, and the mystery line is insurance. The union fee was optional, and I'm keeping it anyway.

The calculator-versus-reality gap got me too. Now I just assume the first payslip is a lesson, not a budget.
