Networking when you don't have a local network yet

OP here — I'll start with what finally worked for me: professional meetups and industry events in my field. Awkward at first, but three events in, faces became familiar and one casual chat turned into an actual job lead. Consistency beat charisma.

Alumni networks were my in — anyone from my university now living here was weirdly willing to have a coffee. A shared background lowers the barrier enormously; people help 'one of their own'.

Coworking spaces double as networking if you pick one where your industry actually hangs out. Half my client leads came from people I met at the coffee machine, not from any formal 'networking event'.

Don't underestimate a well-tended online profile plus genuine, specific messages to people in your field. Not spammy 'hire me' notes — thoughtful questions about their work. A few of those turned into real coffees and one into a referral.

Volunteering for an industry association or event gave me a reason to talk to everyone and a role that wasn't 'unemployed newcomer'. Being useful is the least awkward way to meet people fast.

The mindset shift that helped me: stop 'networking' and start being genuinely curious about people's work. The transactional version feels gross and shows; the curious version makes friends who happen to know about jobs.

Language matters here too — even imperfect efforts in the local language at networking events opened doors that staying in the English-speaking expat bubble kept shut. People remember the newcomer who tried.

And ask everyone you meet for one introduction, not a job. 'Who else should I talk to?' is a small ask people happily say yes to, and it compounds into a network faster than any application ever did.
