Probation periods here feel brutal — how worried should I be?

My contract has a probation period where either side can end things with almost no notice, and coming from somewhere with strong protections it's making me anxious about signing a lease or committing to anything. Is this just normal and I'm overthinking it, or is it as precarious as it feels in the first few months?

Signed a shorter lease deliberately during probation specifically to hedge, then switched to something longer once things were confirmed. Felt like the sensible middle ground.

Same anxiety, currently six weeks into probation myself.

The anxiety faded once I understood why the system’s structured that way locally — it’s genuinely mutual, not just employer-favoring. Reframing it helped more than any reassurance did.

Does the short-notice period cut both ways in practice — can you also leave easily during probation if it’s not a fit?

Yes, genuinely mutual in my experience, which I found reassuring once I actually realised that was the case.
