The way people disagree in meetings here floored me — blunt to the point I thought colleagues were angry, when it's just normal. Elsewhere I've heard it's the opposite, all indirect politeness you have to decode. The actual job I can do; it's the workplace culture that's the real learning curve. What blindsided you about how work works here?

Opposite direction for me — I came from a very direct culture and found the local indirectness the harder thing to decode. Same learning curve, different starting point.

Mild disagreement with the “just be direct back” advice that gets thrown around a lot — backfired for me specifically in my workplace. Reading the room mattered more than matching the style wholesale.

Kwame — for me it eased noticeably after about the first quarter, though I still occasionally misread a room even now.
