Local language exams for citizenship/residency — how did you actually prepare?

My residency path includes a formal language exam eventually, and I want to start preparing properly rather than assuming daily-life fluency will be enough on the day. The problem is I don't actually know how different exam-style language is from the conversational stuff I've been picking up.

A few specific things I'm unsure about:

  • Whether general conversation practice actually transfers to a formal exam format, or if it's a genuinely different skill
  • How far in advance people started dedicated exam prep versus just living normally and hoping it was enough
  • Whether a tutor specifically experienced with this exam is worth it over a general language tutor

If anyone's actually sat one of these exams as part of a residency or citizenship process, I'd really value hearing how you prepared and whether your daily-life level turned out to be close to what was needed, or a real gap you had to close deliberately.

The exam format was noticeably different from daily conversation for me — formal grammar mattered more than I expected. Worth dedicated prep rather than assuming daily fluency covers it.

Tomasz, I haven't sat a citizenship exam yet, but I did a formal language test for my professional recognition, and Paolo is right that the format is its own skill. What helped me was doing old exam papers under timed conditions, three or four times, until the format stopped surprising me. My everyday English was fine, but the first time I did a practice paper I ran out of time on the writing part because I didn't know how they wanted it structured.

My integration course ended with a certificate, and in my case it counted toward one of the requirements. Check whether yours does before you pay for a separate exam.

booked mine for march. doing olena's timed practice papers from next month, didn't know old papers existed until this thread

Olena's tip about practice papers is exactly right, and most official exams publish sample papers or example tasks on their own sites. Where a language certificate is part of a residency or citizenship route, the required level and the accepted tests are set by each country and do change, so check the current list before booking.
