My residency path includes a formal language exam eventually, and I want to start preparing properly rather than assuming daily-life fluency will be enough on the day. The problem is I don't actually know how different exam-style language is from the conversational stuff I've been picking up.
A few specific things I'm unsure about:
- Whether general conversation practice actually transfers to a formal exam format, or if it's a genuinely different skill
- How far in advance people started dedicated exam prep versus just living normally and hoping it was enough
- Whether a tutor specifically experienced with this exam is worth it over a general language tutor
If anyone's actually sat one of these exams as part of a residency or citizenship process, I'd really value hearing how you prepared and whether your daily-life level turned out to be close to what was needed, or a real gap you had to close deliberately.
