OP here — my best source has been just asking younger friends 'how would YOU actually say this?' after I say the textbook version. The gap between the two is exactly the slang I need, and they love teaching it.
I can pass a formal conversation but the second people relax into slang, contractions and in-jokes, I'm lost. Textbooks won't touch this stuff and it's exactly what makes you sound like a person rather than a phrasebook. How did you pick up the real, everyday, unofficial version of the language?
