Moving a lump sum without losing a fortune to fees?

We're moving a chunk of savings over for the flat deposit and initial costs. Between exchange rates and bank fees the estimates I'm getting are eye-watering. What did you actually use to move a larger sum?

A specialist currency-transfer service beat my bank comfortably on a big transfer — the mid-market rate difference alone on a deposit-sized sum was not small. Compare the all-in rate, not the headline "no fee".

Split it if you can and watch the rate over a couple of weeks rather than moving it all on a bad day. Timing a big transfer saved me more than shaving fees did.

Whatever you use, do a tiny test transfer first. I did, caught a wrong reference field, and avoided a very stressful "where's my deposit" week.

Test transfer + compare the all-in rate — noted. That eye-watering estimate was my bank's, unsurprisingly.
