Sending money back home regularly — what's actually cheapest, or does it depend too much on the country pair?

I send money home fairly regularly and the options all seem to have different trade-offs — traditional bank transfer, dedicated remittance apps, digital wallets. Is there an actual "best" answer or does it just depend heavily on which two countries are involved?

A dedicated remittance app beat my bank by a wide margin on my specific corridor. Worth actually comparing rather than defaulting to the bank out of habit.

Depends so much on the country pair, agree with your framing of the question.

A digital wallet worked well for smaller frequent amounts, a dedicated remittance app better for the occasional larger one — mixed approach rather than one tool for everything.

Following, currently overpaying my bank out of pure inertia, probably.

Does anyone actually compare the real total cost including the hidden exchange margin, not just the advertised transfer fee?

Yes — learned to check the actual received amount against the mid-market rate. The advertised fee alone is genuinely misleading on its own.

OP here — thank you, the mixed-approach idea from Ahmed hadn’t occurred to me at all.
