Deregistering from your home country — did you, and did it matter?

Starting this because of a conversation at work. In Germany you deregister your address when you move abroad, and I did that before leaving for Sweden, mostly because my mother told me to. It turned out to matter for my health insurance and my tax situation, and apparently leaving without deregistering can cause problems later, from what colleagues told me.

My Swedish colleagues had never heard of such a thing, and a friend from another country told me her home country has no deregistration at all, just a form for the tax office.

Did you have to deregister, or notify anyone official, when you left your home country? Did it matter later, or was it just paperwork?

The Philippines has a registration for workers abroad, which I did before I left for Canada.

Nigeria didn't require anything, but we kept our tax records from home in one folder, just in case.

Good reminder that leaving has paperwork too, not only arriving.
