The admin you forgot to cancel back home

A small confession to start this new section. Eight months after moving to Ireland, I discovered I was still paying for a gym membership in Bucharest. Eight months. For a gym I'd visited maybe twice in the year before I left.

Since then I've found two more: a magazine subscription my mother had gifted me, which was renewing itself happily, and a parking permit for a car I sold before the move. None of them were big amounts, but together they annoy me more than I can explain.

So, for everyone planning a move, let's build the list nobody gave us. What did you forget to cancel, close or update back home, and how did you find out?

Mobile phone contract, which kept charging me for four months because it needed a signed letter, not an email.

We're making our list now, so this thread is perfectly timed. So far we have: the newspaper, the garden service, the home insurance (only after the sale), the car tax, two charity direct debits that we want to keep but need to move, the library card, and the dentist, who apparently charges if you miss a check-up you've forgotten about. My husband wants to add "the neighbours", which I've told him is not how it works.

Home-country health insurance, which I paid for three months after we arrived because I thought I'd cancelled it by phone.

A streaming subscription in the old currency, still going, because I can't remember the password to cancel it.

My phone plan back home, which I forgot until my first bill arrived at my mum's house and she thought I'd been scammed.

Tax registration in Argentina, which turned out to matter far more than the gym ever did.

Diego, that sounds like the dangerous version of this thread.

Diego's reply is the important one hidden in a light-hearted thread: some things back home aren't subscriptions but registrations, and those can have real consequences if they're not updated. Tax residency, the address the pension service and tax office hold, voter or residence registration, and in some countries a formal deregistration when you leave. Before the move, it's worth splitting your list into "cancel" (gyms, magazines, phone plans) and "notify or change" (tax, pensions, banks, registrations), because the second list is the one that matters. The Leaving section of each country guide covers the departure side, for example the Leaving section for Romania, and a new thread on deregistering is already running in Paperwork & Local Admin.

Car insurance on a car my brother was already driving, which I discovered only when my brother had a small accident.

Postal redirect expired after a year, and a year of letters went straight to strangers.
