Keep a base back home or sell up completely?

We're three months from the move, and the one decision we keep avoiding is the house. Forty years in Sweden, the children grown and living nearby, and a flat in the city that we could sell or rent out.

Selling feels final and would make the move simpler. Keeping it feels safer, but it means being landlords from abroad, or leaving it empty, and it means we're not fully committing to the new life. Our children have opinions too, and they don't agree with each other.

What did you do: keep a base back home, or sell up completely? If you kept something, was it worth the effort? And if you sold, did you regret it?

Linda, we sold, and I'll be honest, the first month after the sale I felt slightly sick. There's something about not having a key to anything in the old country that makes the move very real. A year later I don't regret it at all. Being a landlord from abroad sounded manageable, until a friend who did it spent a weekend on the phone about a broken boiler. We rent a small flat near our daughter when we visit, and that has turned out to be enough of a base.

We kept ours for two years as a safety net and sold it in the end, once we knew we were staying.

From the children's side, my parents keeping their flat meant I always had somewhere to go home to.
