Entry stay running out and still no permit decision — what did you do?

Bit of a nervous post. I came to Italy in June to live with my partner Giulia, applied for my permit as her family member within the first week, and got the receipt from the post office. The appointment for fingerprints is in October. Meanwhile, the period I was allowed to stay on entry runs out in early September.

Everyone keeps telling me the receipt is enough and I'm fine to stay. I believe them, mostly. But I'd like to go to Mexico in November for my sister's wedding, and nobody seems sure whether I'd be let back in with just a receipt.

Has anyone been in this in-between situation? Did you stay put until the card arrived, or travel on the receipt? I'd love to hear actual experiences, not just "it should be fine".

In Portugal I was in almost exactly this position, so I understand the nerves. The receipt covered me for staying, and I never had a problem inside the country: the bank, the landlord and the health centre all accepted it once I explained what it was.

Travel was a different question. I asked four people and got four answers, including one from a friend who'd done it without trouble and one from a friend who had a very long conversation at the airport. In the end I decided the only answer that mattered was the immigration office's, so I asked them directly, in writing, with my receipt number and the dates of the trip. It took three weeks to get a reply, which I'd factor in given your November date.

Their answer applied to my permit type and my nationality, so I won't repeat it here as if it applies to you. But having it on paper meant that if anyone questioned me, I could show them the office's own words. That was worth more to my peace of mind than any forum post, including this one.

Travelled on a receipt once, in Spain. It worked, but I was asked more questions at the border than I'd like, and it was the most stressful hour of that year.

Diego, the most stressful hour of the year is exactly what I'm trying to avoid at my sister's wedding. Asking in writing, as Isabella did, sounds like the right move.

This is one where I'd only trust the official answer for your exact situation. Whether a receipt or pending application lets you leave and re-enter depends on the country, your nationality and the type of permit, and it's the kind of rule that gets clarified or changed. The written answer from the immigration office, as Isabella did, is the gold standard.

The Visa section for Italy covers the family member route and links to the official sources to check.

If it helps, the wait between the receipt and the card feels endless while you're in it and completely unremarkable a year later. Hope the wedding works out.

My cousin in Bologna waited for her card until the week before a trip home. Get the October appointment done and keep asking.
