Proof-of-funds requirements — how much did you actually need to show?

The official guidance gives a figure but the forums are full of people saying the real expectation was higher, or that how you show it (savings vs income vs a sponsor) mattered as much as the amount. I don't want my application bounced over this. Without quoting numbers that'll be outdated tomorrow — how did you approach proving funds?

The HOW mattered as much as the amount for me — they wanted the funds to have been settled in the account for a period, not just parked there the week before. A big last-minute deposit can actually raise questions. Season your funds well in advance.

OP here, and that's reassuring to hear phrased that way — I'd been fixated on the number and ignoring the 'held for X months' detail entirely. Sounds like steady, evidenced savings beat a big fresh lump sum.

Whether they accept savings vs regular income vs a sponsor varies a lot, and each needs different evidence. I showed a mix and made sure every statement was official, stamped, and translated. Presentation and proof format tripped up more people I know than the raw amount.

This is a really important one to get right, and exactly where I'd caution against trusting a specific figure from any forum, including this one — proof-of-funds thresholds, what counts as acceptable evidence, and the required holding period are country- and visa-specific and get updated regularly. Please check the current official requirement via the Visa section of your destination guide, and for a high-stakes application consider a qualified immigration adviser. The wrong amount or the wrong evidence format is a common, avoidable refusal.

Aim comfortably ABOVE any stated minimum if you can — several people I know were technically 'at' the threshold and still questioned. A clear margin removes the discretion from the equation. But verify the real current figure first, as Jimmy says.

Get bank statements in the exact format they specify — official, stamped, sometimes translated and within a recency window. My first set was rejected purely on format despite the money being plainly there. Read the evidence spec as carefully as the amount.

If a family member is funding you, the sponsor route usually needs its OWN documentation — their statements, a formal letter, proof of relationship. Don't assume 'my parents will cover it' is enough without the paperwork to back it. Check what your route requires.

Keep the funds STABLE through the whole processing period, not just on the day you apply — some cases get a second look, and a sudden drop in the balance mid-process can raise questions. I left mine untouched until the decision came through.
