Renewing your first residence permit — when did you start and what tripped you?

Started about two months ahead based on a friend’s warning. Felt early at the time, glad I did once I saw how long processing actually took in practice.

Does the permit stay valid automatically while a renewal is pending, or is there a real gap risk to worry about?

In my case I got a temporary extension document specifically to bridge the gap while the renewal was processed — worth asking about directly if it’s not offered automatically.
