Digital Services
Digital ID, e-government and essential apps in Canada.
No national digital ID — provincial credentials advancing (2026)
Canada does not yet have a single deployed national digital identity credential. The federal government has published a Digital Identity Trust Framework and is working toward interoperable digital IDs, but no nationwide digital ID card or app has been launched as of 2026. BC Services Card (British Columbia) is the most advanced provincial digital ID — available as a smartphone app for BC government services and some federal interactions. Ontario is piloting digital credentials. Most Canadians still verify identity in person, via photo ID upload, or by video call.
How to get it: BC Services Card app: issued to BC residents who hold a valid BC Services Card (provincial health card). Download the "BC Services Card" app, verify using your physical card + a selfie, and enable digital identity. Ontario: Ontario Digital Identity pilot is expanding but not yet widely available. For federal services, use a GCKey account (canada.ca/en/government/sign-in-online-account) or a Sign-In Partner (TD, Scotiabank, RBC, BMO, Desjardins, and others link to federal portals).
E-Government Portal
https://www.canada.caFederal e-government in Canada is functional and increasingly digital, with CRA My Account being the most polished and widely used portal. GCKey is the standard federal login credential — create one at canada.ca and use it for CRA, IRCC, and Service Canada. Two-factor authentication (2FA) is mandatory for most federal portals. Provincial services are handled by separate provincial portals: Ontario (ontario.ca/serviceontario), BC (gov.bc.ca), Alberta (alberta.ca/services), Quebec (services.quebec.ca). Set up CRA My Account as soon as you have a SIN and have filed your first tax return — it unlocks access to TFSA tracking, CCB, and benefit applications.
