Tax residency when you move every few months — how are you handling it?

moving between countries every few months and i realise i don't really know where i'm tax resident any more. home country thinks it's them, the last country i stayed in might think it's them, and i'm not sure any of them are right.

how are you handling this? do you keep a base somewhere on purpose? use an adviser? count days in a spreadsheet? trying to fix it before it becomes a real problem.

Pavel, I had exactly this confusion in my first nomad year, and the answer was to stop being a person with no base. I chose one country, registered there properly, and planned my travel around its rules. Before that, I was technically at risk of more than one country thinking I owed them, and I had no idea which. A cross-border accountant helped me map it in one meeting. The spreadsheet of days is useful, but it only helps once you know which rules you're counting against.

A base on purpose, plus an adviser. Counting days alone doesn't tell you where you belong, it just tells you where you've been. I did the spreadsheet for a year before realising it answered the wrong question.

This is worth sorting early, and Isabella's approach is the one I'd point people to: choose a base deliberately, understand its residence rules, and get advice that covers your home country too. Tax residency tests vary (days present, a permanent home, where your life is centred) and they can overlap, which is exactly where treaties come in. The Tax section for Portugal gives an example of how the residence test works, and for a multi-country setup a qualified adviser is the right next step.

Keep records of every entry and exit date too. You'll need them whichever answer you get.
