Job offer came with relocation help — what did yours actually cover?

My move to Germany was an internal assignment, so I got a relocation package, and I've since learned that packages vary enormously even inside the same company. Ours covered:

  • flights for the family
  • one month of temporary housing
  • movers for a limited volume of belongings
  • two days with a relocation agent for the registration appointment and flat viewings
  • a language course for me, and one session with a tax adviser

What it didn't cover, and what I wish I'd asked about: anything for school fees during the transition, a second month of temporary housing (we needed it), and any support for my husband's job search.

For those who moved with employer help: what did yours actually include, what turned out to be most valuable, and what would you negotiate for if you could do it again?

Self-relocated, so I got nothing. Reading this with envy.

Years ago, with a previous employer, I had one, and the most valuable thing wasn't the biggest line on the list. It was the relocation agent, because they knew which appointments to book in which order and got us into the address registration in the first week.

If I were negotiating again, I'd ask for these, roughly in order:

  • flexibility on temporary housing (an extra month on standby is cheap for them and priceless for you)
  • tax advice in both countries for the year of the move, not only the destination
  • something for the partner: language lessons, a career coach, even access to the same agent for a few hours
  • a clear answer on what happens to the package if you leave within a year or two

And get every promise in writing, including the small ones. People change roles, and the person who promised you the second month may not be the person approving the invoice.

Mine was a one-off allowance rather than a list of services, which sounded generous until I realised it was taxed as income. Nobody mentioned that until the payslip arrived. If you're offered a lump sum, ask how it will be taxed before you start spending it in your head.

Movers and flights were covered for us, but not the dog. Getting her to Sweden cost more than moving the entire flat, which was a fun discovery.

Anna, the tax on the lump sum is a very good point. Ours was services, but I know colleagues who got the allowance and had the same surprise.

Relocation agent did my registration appointment and two days of flat viewings. Worth more than all the other lines put together.

Hospital recruitment programme in my case, so it was quite a structured package: flights, the first months of accommodation in a staff flat near the hospital, reimbursement for the practical exam, and a named person in HR who answered my questions before I arrived. That last one was worth more than it sounds. When you're doing all this from another continent, one reliable email address is gold.

The part people should read twice is the repayment clause. If you leave within a certain period, you pay part of the package back, and the amount reduces month by month. That's fair enough in principle, but I've seen colleagues caught out by it when a better job came along in their first year, and one who stayed in a job she was unhappy in because of it.

So read it before you sign, not when you're about to leave, and ask HR to confirm in writing exactly how it's calculated. Mine was happy to.

With kids, ask about school support specifically. My employer paid part of the international school fees for the first term while the kids learned German, and that transition term made all the difference.

Negotiate the start date, not just the money. A later start gave me three weeks to settle before the job took over my life.

Skilled independent visa, so no employer, no package. We budgeted for the first three months as if everything would cost more than expected, and that was accurate.
