Denominations
Coins: 1, 2, 5, 10 pesos. Notes: 100, 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000, 10,000 pesos. USD widely used for property and high-value transactions.
Payment Culture
Mercado Pago is the dominant fintech platform — QR payments accepted at most shops, restaurants and markets. Cash is still common, especially outside Buenos Aires. Card payments widespread in cities. The peso has historically been volatile; USD is the de facto store of value for large purchases.
ATM Tips
Foreign cards are accepted at Banelco (red) and Link (green) network ATMs. Daily withdrawal limits are relatively low. Fees of USD 3–5 per withdrawal are typical. Bank ATMs inside branches are safer than street ATMs. Mercado Pago offers a virtual card for online use.
Exchange Tips
Since Milei reforms (2023–2026), the blue dollar (informal exchange rate) has narrowed significantly vs the official rate. Use legal casas de cambio or trusted Wise transfers for international conversions. Avoid street exchanges (cuevas) which carry risk of fake bills and robbery. Impuesto PAIS was eliminated in September 2024.
