Denominations
Coins: ¥1, ¥5, ¥10, ¥50, ¥100, ¥500. Notes: ¥1,000, ¥5,000, ¥10,000 (redesigned July 2024). New ¥500 bicolour coin introduced 2021.
Payment Culture
Japan is rapidly moving cashless but cash remains essential. IC cards (Suica/PASMO) are the dominant payment method for transit and convenience stores. Many smaller restaurants, izakayas, and local shops are cash-only. Always carry ¥5,000–10,000 in cash. QR code payments (PayPay, au PAY, LINE Pay) are growing fast.
ATM Tips
7-Eleven Bank ATMs (セブン銀行) accept most foreign Visa/Mastercard/Cirrus cards 24/7 — the most reliable option for foreigners. Japan Post Bank (ゆうちょ) ATMs also accept international cards. Convenience store ATMs typically charge ¥110–220 per withdrawal.
Exchange Tips
Airport exchange desks give poor rates. Best rates at Shinsei Bank, Sony Bank online, or Wise. Never exchange at hotels. The post office (ゆうちょ) offers fair rates. 7-Eleven Bank ATMs often give close to mid-market rates for foreign cards.
