Volunteering

Volunteering (volontiranje) in Serbia is organised through NGOs, animal welfare groups, environmental campaigns, refugee/migrant support centres, cultural festivals and community associations. The sector is growing but less professionalised than in Western Europe — many organisations operate informally and find volunteers through Facebook and word of mouth. Language is less of a barrier than in formal employment; international volunteers are welcomed in many programmes. The national volunteer platform volonterinamrezi.rs (UNICEF/Ministry of Youth partnership) maintains a national volunteer registry and opportunities database.

Tax Benefit

Serbia has no specific annual tax-free volunteer stipend. Volunteer expense reimbursements (travel, accommodation) are generally not taxable if properly documented as genuine cost coverage. Regular stipends paid to volunteers can trigger employment-contribution questions — get advice from the NGO's accountant.
