Visa-Free Access

Switzerland is in the Schengen Area, so all Schengen visas are valid. Visa-free 90-day stays (within any 180-day period) for citizens of: all EU/EEA countries, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Israel, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, and 60+ others. Citizens of visa-required countries (India, China, Russia, Turkey, Philippines, most of Africa) must apply for a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa at a Swiss consulate before travel. Residence permits for stays over 90 days are governed by Swiss law, not Schengen rules.

Switzerland is NOT an EU member and does NOT issue EU Blue Cards, Schengen long-stay visas, or digital nomad visas. The permit categories above are Switzerland-specific and governed by the Foreign Nationals and Integration Act (AIG/LEtr). Every permit must be applied for through the cantonal Migrationsamt / Office cantonal de la population — there is NO centralised federal application. Processing times and exact fees vary by canton (e.g. Geneva is faster than Zurich but costs more). Switzerland has one of the world's strictest non-EU immigration regimes: nearly every non-EU hire is a negotiated exception to quota rather than an automatic right. Plan carefully — and always confirm with your canton's Migrationsamt.

Permit L (Short-term residence)

Eligibility

Employment contract for less than 12 months, short-term assignments, seasonal work, specific training, or applicants to quota-restricted positions.

Permit B (Residence)

Duration: 5 years (EU/EFTA) or 1 year renewable (non-EU). Renewed if employment and housing conditions remain met.

Eligibility

EU/EFTA: employment contract over 12 months or self-employment or sufficient means. Non-EU: skilled professionals, executives, specialists meeting quota criteria + employer justification.

2–6 weeks for EU/EFTA; 2–4 months for non-EU

💡 Family reunion available. After 5 (EU/EFTA nationals of certain countries + integrated non-EU with B1 language) or 10 years of continuous residence: upgrade to C permit. Key reminder: report every move/change at the Einwohnerkontrolle within 14 days.

Permit C (Settlement / Permanent)

Duration: Indefinite. Renewed every 5 years (ID card validity) but status is permanent unless revoked for serious reasons.

Eligibility

Granted after 10 years continuous residence (5 for EU/EFTA nationals of USA, Canada, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, Spain, UK). Successful integration required — language (A2 oral, A1 written minimum in most cantons), no debt/criminal record, economic independence.

💡 The gold standard for settled foreign residents. Allows full labour market freedom, self-employment, and family reunion on par with Swiss citizens. Equivalent of EU long-term residence. Prerequisite for naturalisation (10-year minimum residence required).

Permit G (Cross-border / Frontalier)

Eligibility

EU/EFTA nationals living in a neighbouring country (France, Germany, Italy, Austria) and working in Switzerland, commuting at least weekly home.

💡 Widespread in Geneva (90,000+ French frontaliers), Ticino (70,000+ Italian), Basel (45,000+ from France/Germany). Tax treatment varies by country of residence and bilateral agreement. Unemployment benefits are paid by country of residence, not Switzerland.

Permit Ci (Spouses of diplomats / international civil servants)

No Digital Nomad Visa (Switzerland)

Digital Nomad

Eligibility

Switzerland does not offer a dedicated digital nomad visa. EU/EFTA nationals have freedom of movement under the Agreement on Free Movement of Persons (AFMP) — they can work remotely in Switzerland and register for a Permit B (residence, 5 years) or Permit L (short-term, up to 12 months). Non-EU nationals face extremely limited options: Switzerland operates one of the strictest non-EU immigration regimes in Europe — nearly all permits are employer-tied and subject to annual federal quotas.

EU/EFTA permit: 2–6 weeks. Non-EU employer-sponsored permit: 8–16 weeks (subject to quota availability).

Requirements

💡 Switzerland does NOT issue EU Blue Cards or digital nomad visas. Non-EU nationals cannot obtain a Swiss permit by demonstrating foreign remote income alone — all non-EU permits require a specific sponsoring employer or are quota-restricted. EU/EFTA digital nomads can obtain Permit B as self-sufficient persons provided they can show CHF 21,600+/year income and comprehensive KVG-compliant health insurance. All permits are managed by the cantonal Migrationsamt — there is no central federal application. Confirm with your specific canton before relocating.
