👶 Childcare & Kindergarten
Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG) subsidies available for low-income families through state child care assistance programs. Some states also offer tiered subsidies; employers may offer Dependent Care FSA (up to $5,000 pre-tax).
Tour center, submit application and registration fee ($50–250), provide immunization records, emergency contacts, and a signed enrollment contract. First month tuition + security deposit often due at enrollment.
State CCDBG subsidies accept licensed home daycares. Check state licensing database before enrolling.
Interview the provider in their home. Verify state license, check references, ask about backup care when the provider is sick. Sign a written contract detailing hours, rates, sick-day policy, and vacation.
Dependent Care FSA and Child & Dependent Care Tax Credit can offset some costs. Employer is legally required to file Schedule H and pay nanny taxes if wages exceed $2,700/year (2024 threshold).
Interview 3–5 candidates, trial day, background check, reference calls, written work agreement. Use HomePay/GTM/Poppins to manage nanny payroll and taxes.
Not eligible for Dependent Care FSA because au pair is a J-1 visa cultural exchange, not employment. However, agency fees may qualify for the Child & Dependent Care Tax Credit.
Host family applies through sponsor agency, reviews matched candidate profiles, video interviews. Au pair arrives on J-1 visa for 12 months (extendable to 24). Provide room, meals, and up to 45 hours/week of childcare.
Head Start is a federally-funded free preschool program for low-income families (at or below 100% FPL). Provides early childhood education, meals, and family support.
Apply through your state or district Pre-K portal. Required: birth certificate, proof of residency, immunization records. Income documentation required for Head Start only.
🏫 Schools
Enroll at assigned neighborhood school via district website. Bring proof of residency (utility bill/lease), child's birth certificate, immunization records, previous school records. School zoning determined by home address.
District-assigned or application-based (magnet/specialized schools). College prep track through AP/IB/dual enrollment.
🌍 International Schools
Major cities have British schools, French lycees, German, Japanese, international schools. $20k-60k/year. IB and Cambridge programs available.
🎓 University
Common App for most 4-year colleges. Transcripts, SAT/ACT (optional at many schools post-2020), 2-3 essays, 2-3 recommendations, extracurriculars. Early Decision Nov, Regular Jan, Rolling. Foreign students also need TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo English.
