📋 Relocation Process
1) Visit accredited vet for health certificate within 10 days of travel (some countries/airlines 30 days); 2) Confirm vaccinations current; 3) Microchip ISO-standard 15-digit; 4) Submit USDA endorsement via VEHCS if required; 5) For dogs from high-risk rabies countries: CDC Dog Import Form 2+ days before arrival at approved port; 6) Check airline policy (United PetSafe, American Airlines Cargo, Alaska Airlines pet-friendly; Delta cargo only as of 2021); 7) Acclimate pet to carrier; 8) Customs clearance on arrival — usually visual inspection only for non-high-risk.
New CDC dog import rules effective Aug 1, 2024 are strict for dogs from 100+ high-risk rabies countries including India, China, Russia, most of Africa. From low-risk (UK, most of Europe, Canada, Australia): easier process. Service dogs have different rules but still require documentation. Emotional Support Animals no longer accepted by major airlines (2021 DOT rule change) — only ADA-defined service dogs.
