- ✓ Learn basic Vietnamese phrases and tones — even minimal effort is enormously appreciated by Vietnamese people and opens doors that remain closed to purely English-speaking expats.
- ✓ Download Zalo and use it as your primary communication tool for Vietnamese contacts — refusing to use Zalo in Vietnam is equivalent to refusing to use WhatsApp in Europe.
- ✓ Attend local markets (chợ) rather than only supermarkets — the social experience of wet market shopping is central to Vietnamese daily life and builds rapport with neighbours.
- ✓ Join a sport or hobby group in your first month — Hash House Harriers (running/social, HCMC and Hanoi), football leagues, CrossFit boxes, yoga studios and cycling clubs are all expat-inclusive.
- ✓ Accept food invitations generously — being invited to someone's home for a meal is a significant gesture of trust and friendship in Vietnamese culture. Always bring a gift (fruit, pastries, nice tea).

Vietnam's sports culture is dominated by football (soccer) and badminton. HCMC and Hanoi have well-developed gym, yoga and fitness studio ecosystems. Outdoor recreation: Da Lat (cycling, trekking), Sapa (trekking), Phu Quoc (diving, snorkelling), Da Nang (surfing, kitesurfing). Vietnam's long coastline makes water sports excellent. Volunteering
Volunteering in Vietnam by foreigners requires careful attention to work permit implications — volunteering that constitutes work under Vietnamese labour law requires a work permit. Long-term skilled volunteering (teaching, medical, engineering) should be structured through an NGO with MoFA approval or through a Vietnamese-registered organisation with proper work authorisation.
