Canary Islands (IC)
The Canary Islands are Spain's Atlantic autonomous community: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Graciosa.
Banking in Canary Islands
Recommended banks, payment culture and credit score basics.
The Canary Islands are Spanish territory (EU member) but benefit from a special tax regime (ZEC / REF) and are outside the EU VAT area. Banking is entirely Spanish: IBAN format ES, Bizum — free instant transfer between Spanish bank accounts — is the daily payment default. Direct debit (domiciliación bancaria) for recurring bills (rent, utilities, gym, insurance, Seguridad Social) is universal. Traditional banks (Santander, BBVA, CaixaBank) charge fees; challenger banks (N26, Revolut, EVO) and fully online products (ING, MyInvestor, Openbank) offer free current accounts with direct deposit. A Spanish NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) is required to open any Spanish bank account.
Recommended banks

Requirements: Passport/NIE + empadronamiento or proof of income. Video-identification available.
- + Strong mobile app
- + English support in branches and chat
- + Bizum natively
- + Good expat onboarding
- - Branch service primarily in Spanish — English available at major tourist-area branches (Las Palmas, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Playa del Inglés) but not guaranteed at all locations
- - NIE required for account opening — expats must apply for NIE at the Extranjería office or Spanish consulate; allow 2–4 weeks for NIE processing before full account opening
- - International SWIFT fees: €15–30 per outbound transfer plus FX spread — Wise is considerably cheaper for regular transfers to non-EU destinations
- - Standard account fee €14/month applies without conditions — Cuenta Online (€0) requires accepting digital-only service; confirm which product matches your banking needs
Santander
EnglishMonthly fee: €0 (1|2|3 Smart cuenta with income domiciliation) / €15
Requirements: Passport/NIE + proof of address or income
- + Extensive branch network (4,000+ ES)
- + International transfers
- + Strong English service in major offices
- - NIE required — foreigners must obtain NIE from Extranjería or Spanish consulate before account opening; same process as all Spanish banks
- - International SWIFT fees: €15–30 per outbound transfer — Wise or Revolut are considerably cheaper for regular non-EU transfers
- - Branch service primarily in Spanish — English available at main tourist-resort branches but variable at smaller locations and rural offices
- - Monthly fee €15 applies without salary domiciliation or qualifying conditions — confirm 1|2|3 Smart cuenta requirements before opening to ensure fee waiver eligibility
CaixaBank (imaginBank)
EnglishMonthly fee: €0 for under-30s / €12 standard
Requirements: imaginBank: passport + selfie for under-30s, no branch visit. Standard CaixaBank: branch visit + NIE.
- + imaginBank has excellent app
- + Gen-Z targeting
- + Free ATM in CaixaBank network
- - imaginBank app is in Spanish only — no English interface; functional Spanish required for full self-service use of the app
- - imaginBank age restriction (under 30) means standard CaixaBank account required for older expats — standard account requires in-person branch visit and NIE; less convenient than digital onboarding
- - International SWIFT fees at standard CaixaBank: €15–30 per outbound transfer — Wise is considerably cheaper for regular non-EU transfers; imaginBank less suited to international banking
- - Monthly fee €12 applies for standard CaixaBank account without qualifying conditions — imaginBank free but restricted to under-30s; over-30 expats pay unless conditions met
N26
EnglishMonthly fee: €0 (Standard) / €4.90 (Smart) / €9.90 (Go, formerly You)
Requirements: Passport + video-selfie. No Spanish address initially required.
- + Can open from abroad
- + German IBAN (DE) accepted for Spanish payments
- + English app
- + Free virtual card
- - DE IBAN occasionally rejected by some Spanish employers or landlords — while IBAN discrimination is illegal under EU law, some Canary Islands landlords and older employers still expect an ES IBAN
- - Limited Bizum functionality in the past (improving since 2024) — verify current Bizum availability before relying on N26 for Canary Islands peer-to-peer payments
- - Customer service online only — no branch in the Canary Islands; all issues resolved via chat and email; complex problems take longer than at traditional Spanish banks
- - International SWIFT fees for non-SEPA transfers — N26 Standard users pay per-transfer fees for non-EU wires; check current plan limits; Wise is cheaper for regular transfers outside Europe
Revolut
EnglishMonthly fee: €0–13.99 depending on plan
Requirements: Passport + selfie, instant
- + Multi-currency
- + Best FX rates for international use
- + Budgeting tools
- - Lithuanian IBAN (LT) — some Spanish employers and Hacienda (AEAT) refuse non-ES IBAN for direct debits, though EU law forbids IBAN discrimination
- - Bizum integration has been limited — Revolut's Bizum compatibility is improving but historically unreliable; verify current functionality before relying on Revolut for Bizum peer-to-peer payments in the Canary Islands
- - Not covered under Spanish Fondo de Garantía de Depósitos (FGD) — Revolut operates under Lithuanian banking licence; deposits not insured under Spanish deposit protection scheme
- - Customer service quality variable — primarily chat-based; complex disputes can take days without in-branch escalation option
EVO Banco (Bankinter)
Monthly fee: €0 (no conditions)
Requirements: NIE + online video-ID

- - NIE required — must obtain from Extranjería before account opening; same requirement as all Spanish banks
- - International SWIFT fees apply — Wise or Revolut are cheaper for non-EU international transfers; EVO Banco not designed for cross-border banking
- - Smaller branch network than BBVA or Santander — EVO Banco is primarily an online bank with limited physical presence in the Canary Islands; complex in-person banking requires Bankinter parent branches

- - Spanish-language customer service — English support limited; complex issues may require Spanish-language communication
- - International SWIFT fees apply — despite 100% online positioning, Wise offers better rates for non-EU transfers
- - Investment products (robo-advisor) may have tax implications for non-Spanish tax residents — confirm tax treatment before using the investment platform if your tax residence is outside Spain
WiZink
Monthly fee: Depends on product
Requirements: Online
- + High-interest savings
- + Credit card specialist
- - Spanish-only interface — no English support; not suitable for expats unable to use Spanish-language interfaces for credit and savings management

- - NIE required — same as all Spanish financial providers; standard documentation requirements apply
- - International wire transfer capabilities limited — WiZink not designed for SWIFT international transfers; use a full bank or Wise for international remittances
MyInvestor (Andbank)
EnglishMonthly fee: €0
Requirements: NIE + video-ID
- + Free account + competitive mortgages
- + Investment platform with free ETFs
- + Strong English onboarding
- - NIE required — same as all Spanish banks; online onboarding still requires valid Spanish tax ID
- - Investment platform complexity — MyInvestor's core strength is ETF investing and mortgages; expats seeking simple day-to-day banking may find the interface investment-focused and potentially confusing
- - International SWIFT fees apply — Wise is cheaper for non-EU international transfers
- - Smaller customer base — MyInvestor is a newer bank with less established infrastructure; complex disputes or in-person resolution more challenging than at Santander or BBVA
Payment culture
Card + contactless is now dominant (90%+ of transactions by value post-COVID). Bizum is the universal peer-to-peer payment — essential to have. Apple Pay / Google Pay widely accepted. Cash still matters: small bars, local markets, some taxis, rural areas, bar tips. Carry €20–40 cash. Girocard equivalent does not exist — Spanish debit cards are Visa Debit or Mastercard Debit. The Canary Islands special tax zone (ZEC/REF/IGIC) does not affect retail banking or payment methods.
Cash access
Use your own bank's ATMs (CaixaBank, Santander, BBVA, Sabadell, ING, Bankinter) to avoid fees. Third-party ATMs: €1.50–5 fee. Euronet standalone ATMs in tourist zones (particularly in resort areas like Maspalomas, Playa de las Américas): up to €6 surcharge — avoid. Never accept Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) at ATMs or POS — always pay in EUR.
ASNEF / CIRBE
ASNEF (Asociación Nacional de Establecimientos Financieros de Crédito): Spain's main default registry — not a score but a blacklist of those with unpaid debts. Check your status free at asnef.com. CIRBE (Central de Información de Riesgos del Banco de España): register of all credit you hold >€6,000, accessible free at bde.es (Cl@ve or certificado digital required).
Free annual check: ASNEF: free check via asnef.com. CIRBE: free check at bde.es with Cl@ve PIN or digital certificate — updated monthly.
Spain does NOT have a US/UK-style credit score (FICO/Equifax). Instead banks check ASNEF (are you on a default list?) and CIRBE (how much credit do you already have?). Mortgage approvals use income-based affordability (debt-to-income ≤ 35%) not a score. Damage risks: a single unpaid €50 phone bill can put you on ASNEF; once on ASNEF, getting credit is nearly impossible for 5 years. Dispute via burofax to the creditor + ASNEF directly.
International transfers
Wise and Revolut offer the best FX rates for international transfers. Traditional banks charge 2–4% spread + €15–30 fees. SEPA Instant (Transferencia SEPA Inmediata) within EU: under 10 seconds, free or €0.20, widely available since 2023. Bizum only works between Spanish banks.
