Citizenship & Permanent Residency
Long-term settlement options in China.
๐
Permanent Residency
Name
Chinese Permanent Residence ID Card
Eligibility
Highly qualified talent, major investors, senior employees with long service and income/tax thresholds, family reunion cases, or special contributions. Local criteria vary.
Duration
Permanent residence card validity is usually 5 or 10 years depending age/status, with renewal required.
Requirements
- โValid passport
- โLong-term lawful residence
- โClean criminal record
- โStable income/tax records or qualifying family/investment/talent basis
- โHealth documents
- โLocal recommendation or employer documents where applicable
Access has improved for high-level talent in major cities and free-trade zones. 2026 reforms: the required consecutive work tenure for high-tech industries (AI, biopharmaceuticals) was reduced from 4 to 2 years; income threshold is now assessed as top 20% of salaries for the role and city (more flexible). Shanghai launched a new Overseas Talent Residence Permit framework effective 1 July 2025 (valid through June 2030) for highly qualified foreign professionals with bachelor's or above. New K visa (October 2025): for young science and technology talent โ removes employer sponsorship requirement for entry but is a visa category, not a PR route.

Citizenship
Name
Naturalisation as a Chinese citizen
Eligibility
Foreign nationals who are close relatives of Chinese nationals, settled in China, or have other legitimate reasons may apply under nationality law.
Duration
No simple points-based timeline; approval is discretionary and rare.
Requirements
- โApplication to public security authorities
- โEvidence of qualifying relationship or settlement
- โRenunciation of foreign nationality if approved
- โChinese-language and integration evidence may be relevant in practice
Naturalisation is uncommon for ordinary expats and should not be treated as a realistic planning route.
Other Routes to Residency & Citizenship
Talent residence facilitation
Eligibility
High-end foreign talent in cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, and free-trade zones.
Duration / Outcome
Residence permits may be issued for longer terms
Requirements
- โCategory A work permit or local talent recognition
- โEmployer sponsorship
- โTax and income evidence
This is residence facilitation, not citizenship.
Family reunion long-term residence
Eligibility
Spouses, children, or parents of Chinese citizens or permanent residents.
Duration / Outcome
Residence permit duration varies
Requirements
- โAuthenticated relationship documents
- โInviter documents
- โProof of support/accommodation
Work is not automatically allowed on family residence status.
High-level foreign talent permanent residence
Eligibility
Foreign experts, senior managers, scientists, entrepreneurs, and investors recognised by national or local talent programmes.
Duration / Outcome
Permanent residence card validity is generally multi-year and renewable.
Requirements
- โRecommendation or employer support
- โProof of position or talent recognition
- โIncome and tax records
- โClean criminal record
- โHealth and residence records
Cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, and free-trade zones may provide more practical routes than smaller cities, but approval remains selective.
Investment-based permanent residence
Eligibility
Foreign investors meeting registered-capital, sector, region, tax, and investment-duration thresholds.
Duration / Outcome
Permanent residence if approved; investment and compliance records must be maintained.
Requirements
- โBusiness licence
- โCapital contribution records
- โTax payment certificates
- โAudit reports
- โNo serious violations
This is not a simple golden-visa route. Real operations, tax contribution, and local policy support matter.
Spouse of Chinese citizen route
Eligibility
Foreign spouse of a Chinese citizen with a stable marriage, long-term residence, and livelihood support in China.
Duration / Outcome
Usually built through repeated family residence permits before any permanent residence application.
Requirements
- โMarriage certificate
- โChinese spouse hukou/ID
- โAccommodation proof
- โFinancial support evidence
- โClean criminal record
Marriage alone does not grant Chinese citizenship or automatic permanent residence.
Child or elderly family support route
Eligibility
Certain family reunion cases involving Chinese citizen or permanent resident relatives.
Duration / Outcome
Residence permit or permanent residence depending case.
Requirements
- โAuthenticated relationship documents
- โProof of dependency or support
- โAccommodation and financial evidence
Useful for family stability but not a work-authorisation substitute.
๐ Dual Citizenship
โ
Dual citizenship is not allowed โ China does not recognise dual citizenship for Chinese nationals. Foreigners naturalising in China are generally expected to renounce previous nationality. Children with mixed-nationality parents can face complex nationality and travel-document issues, especially if one parent is Chinese and the child is born in China or has not clearly settled abroad. Before a birth, adoption, naturalisation, or passport application, mixed-nationality families should speak with both the relevant consulate and the local Exit-Entry Administration office. Do not assume that a foreign passport alone resolves Chinese nationality questions for a child.
