Dominican Republic (DO)
The Dominican Republic is the Caribbean's most visited destination — a lively Spanish-speaking nation sharing the island of Hispaniola with Haiti.
Insurance Guide
Which insurances you actually need in Dominican Republic, prioritised.
Insurance in the Dominican Republic covers both mandatory and voluntary products. Expats should prioritise: international health insurance (critical — ARS/TSS coverage alone is insufficient), vehicle insurance (legally mandatory), property and hurricane insurance (essential in the Atlantic hurricane belt), and personal liability coverage. Life insurance and home contents insurance are available through local and international providers. Main Dominican insurers: MAPFRE, Seguros Universal, La Colonial, Reservas Seguros.
Legally Mandatory
- - Vehicle third-party liability (Responsabilidad Civil Obligatoria — RCO) — legally required for all registered vehicles
- - TSS/ARS health insurance — mandatory for formally employed workers (employer-enrolled)
- - SRL work accident insurance — employer-paid for all employees
International Private Health Insurance
Comprehensive health coverage for medical treatment at private Dominican hospitals and, critically, for medical evacuation to the US or Europe for complex procedures not available locally.
Who needs it: All expats — ARS coverage through TSS is functional but limited to the ARS provider network and has low coverage limits. International health insurance is the realistic primary health coverage for most expats.
Annual cost: USD 1,200–4,200/year (USD 100–350/month) depending on age and coverage level
Ensure your policy covers medical evacuation — complex procedures requiring treatment in the US can cost USD 20,000–100,000+ without insurance. Purchase before arriving in the DR, as pre-existing condition exclusions apply.
Vehicle Comprehensive Insurance
Covers your own vehicle against accident damage, theft, fire, and third-party liability. Third-party only (terceros) is the legal minimum; comprehensive (todo riesgo) is strongly recommended.
Who needs it: All vehicle owners and drivers. Third-party is legally mandatory; comprehensive is highly recommended given high DR accident rates.
Annual cost: RD$8,000–25,000/year for third-party. RD$20,000–60,000/year for comprehensive, depending on vehicle value.
Ensure your comprehensive policy includes 24/7 roadside assistance (asistencia en carretera) — breakdowns are common. Confirm coverage for flood damage and natural disasters — standard in hurricane-zone policies.
Property and Hurricane Insurance
Covers your home (for owners) or contents (for renters) against hurricane damage, flooding, fire, and theft. Hurricane coverage is the critical component in the DR.
Who needs it: All property owners and renters with significant belongings. Hurricane season (June–November) makes this non-negotiable in the DR.
Annual cost: RD$15,000–60,000/year for owners (depends on property value). RD$8,000–20,000/year for renters (contents only).
Check exclusions carefully — flooding, sinkholes, and storm surge may require separate riders. Coastal properties and ground-floor units require specific hurricane/flooding endorsements. Confirm the insurer's claims settlement process and reputation before purchasing.
Personal Liability Insurance
Covers you against claims from third parties for accidental bodily injury or property damage that you cause.
Who needs it: Property owners, domestic employers (cook, cleaner, gardener), and anyone with significant personal assets to protect.
Annual cost: RD$5,000–15,000/year
Particularly important for property owners with staff — if a domestic worker is injured on your property, personal liability coverage protects against lawsuits.
Life Insurance
Provides a death benefit to your beneficiaries. Term life is the most cost-effective option for most expats.
Who needs it: Expats with dependants or significant Dominican financial obligations (mortgage, business loans).
Annual cost: RD$15,000–50,000/year for term life (USD face value), depending on age and sum insured
Life insurance payable to named beneficiaries passes outside the estate and avoids Dominican probate — significant estate planning advantage.
Travel Insurance
Covers trip cancellation, emergency medical treatment abroad, lost baggage, and flight delays for international travel from the DR.
Who needs it: All expats travelling internationally. International health insurance may cover emergency medical abroad, but dedicated travel insurance covers trip cancellation and other travel-specific risks.
Annual cost: USD 100–400/year for annual multi-trip policy
Many credit cards (Visa/Mastercard) include basic travel insurance — check your card benefits before purchasing separately.
Comparison sites
Buy international health insurance before arriving in the DR — pre-existing condition waiting periods apply from the start date.
For vehicle insurance, compare at least 3 quotes — premiums vary significantly between providers for identical coverage.
Hurricane coverage is not optional if you own or rent property — a Category 4 storm can total a house in hours.
Verify insurer claims settlement reputation with expat communities before purchasing — low premiums are meaningless if claims are routinely denied.
Keep all insurance documents (policies, certificates, emergency contacts) in a waterproof bag as part of your hurricane preparedness kit.
