Dominican Republic (DO)
The Dominican Republic is the Caribbean's most visited destination — a lively Spanish-speaking nation sharing the island of Hispaniola with Haiti.
Social Security in Dominican Republic
Benefits, contributions, and how the system works for expats.
The Dominican social security system (TSS — Tesorería de la Seguridad Social) consists of three pillars: AFP (pension/retirement), ARS (health insurance), and SRL (work accident risk). All formally employed workers — including foreigners with valid work permits — must contribute. The system was established by Law 87-01 (2001) and continues to mature. Expats in formal employment are enrolled automatically; self-employed individuals can make voluntary AFP contributions.
Social Security Registration Number
Número de Registro en la Seguridad Social (NSS)
Your employer registers you with the TSS when you start formal employment. You receive your NSS through your employer's HR department. You can verify your registration and contribution history at tss.gob.do using your RNCE (foreigner tax ID). Self-employed individuals apply directly at the TSS offices with their RNCE and personal documentation.

Benefits & Support Payments
AFP Pension
AFP (Administradora de Fondos de Pensiones)
Individual capitalisation pension account. Employee contributes 2.87% of salary; employer contributes 7.10%. Funds accumulate in your personal account with one of the four AFP administrators (AFP Popular, AFP Siembra, AFP Crecer, AFP Scotia). At retirement (60+ for men, 55+ for women with 300+ months of contributions), funds convert to a monthly annuity or programmed withdrawal.
All formally employed workers with valid work permits. Minimum 300 months (25 years) of contributions for full pension. Shorter contribution periods yield proportionally smaller benefits.
Automatic enrolment through employer. Check your AFP balance at tss.gob.do or directly with your AFP administrator. For retirement claim, apply at your AFP administrator with identity and employment history documents.
ARS Health Insurance
ARS (Administradora de Riesgos de Salud)
Mandatory health insurance through a Dominican ARS provider. Employee contributes 3.04% of salary; employer contributes 7.09%. Covers medical consultations, hospitalisation, emergency care, medications, and laboratory tests within the ARS provider's network of authorised clinics and hospitals.
All formally employed workers. Dependants (spouse and children) can be added to the coverage at additional contribution rates.
Automatic enrolment through employer — you choose your ARS from the approved list. Check your coverage and authorised medical centres at tss.gob.do.
SRL Work Accident Insurance
Seguro de Riesgos Laborales (SRL)
Work accident and occupational disease insurance paid entirely by the employer (1.2% of salary). Covers medical treatment for work-related injuries, temporary disability payments (60% of salary for up to 26 weeks), permanent disability pensions, and death benefits for dependants.
All formally employed workers. Coverage begins from first day of employment.
Claims are filed through your employer and the TSS system. Accident must be reported to employer within 24 hours. Employer files SRL claim with TSS.
Disability Pension
Pensión por Invalidez
Monthly pension for workers who become permanently and totally disabled due to non-work-related illness or injury (work-related is covered by SRL). Requires a minimum of 36 months of AFP contributions and medical certification of disability.
36+ months of AFP contributions; medical certificate of total and permanent disability from a certified Dominican medical board.
Apply at your AFP administrator with disability medical certificates and contribution history documentation.
Contribution Overview
Total TSS contribution rate for employed workers: Employee total ~5.9% of gross salary (2.87% AFP + 3.04% ARS). Employer total ~15.4% of gross salary (7.10% AFP + 7.09% ARS + 1.2% SRL). Contribution rates are fixed by law and do not vary by salary level (no ceiling for ARS/AFP contributions). Source: tss.gob.do; contadoresdominicanos.com; verified 2026.
International Social Security Agreements
The Dominican Republic does not have social security totalisation agreements with the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, or most EU countries as of 2026. This means years of TSS contributions in the DR cannot be combined with your home-country pension qualifying periods. US citizens particularly should note the absence of a US-DR social security agreement.
Verify your TSS contributions are being remitted by your employer by checking your account at tss.gob.do using your RNCE or NSS. Employers failing to remit TSS contributions is a known issue — if contributions are deducted from your payslip but not appearing in your TSS account, report this to the TSS inspectorate (ministeriodetrabajo.gob.do).
