Permanent Residency
Name
Long-Stay Residence Permit (Renewable Annual Iqama)
Eligibility
Foreign nationals who hold a valid employment, investment, or family-based reason to remain in Egypt. Egypt does not have a formal "permanent residence" status equivalent to the EU Permanent Residence Card or US Green Card. Instead, residence is maintained through annually renewable permits tied to continued employment, investment, or family relationship.
Duration
1 year (standard work/family permit); up to 5 years for significant GAFI investors
Requirements
- ✓Valid work permit or investor permit in Egypt
- ✓Medical fitness certificate (renewed annually)
- ✓No criminal record
- ✓Continued lawful reason for stay (ongoing employment, investment, or family tie)
- ✓Payment of annual renewal fees (EGP 1,500–5,000 depending on category)
After extended stay in Egypt (years of continuous residence), long-term expats accumulate informal social and professional integration but there is no legal status change. Unlike EU countries, 5 years of residence does not automatically lead to permanent residence rights. Each renewal is treated as a fresh application. Some free zone investors may receive multi-year residence permits through GAFI, which is the closest Egypt offers to a longer-term stability. Retirees typically extend on expired tourist visas — legally grey but practically tolerated for nationals of friendly countries.

Citizenship
Name
Egyptian Citizenship (Naturalisation)
Eligibility
Foreigners married to Egyptian spouses (women specifically, after 2 years of marriage AND 5+ years of Egyptian residence); or by exceptional presidential decree (rarely granted); or by descent through Egyptian father (jus sanguinis — Egyptian father passes citizenship to children regardless of birth country).
Duration
Variable — application processing: 1–3 years; no guaranteed timeline
Requirements
- ✓Residence in Egypt for 5+ continuous years (for marriage route)
- ✓Valid marriage to Egyptian national (2+ years)
- ✓Arabic language proficiency (assessed)
- ✓Good character certificate and police clearance
- ✓No criminal record
- ✓Approval by Ministry of Interior and President's office
- ✓Renunciation of previous citizenship (Egyptian law does not formally recognise dual nationality for naturalised citizens)
Egypt does not have a standard residency-to-citizenship track like most Western countries. There is no investor citizenship programme. Naturalisation by residence alone (without Egyptian spouse or descent) requires presidential decree — this is extremely rare and typically reserved for individuals who have made exceptional contributions to Egypt. The process is entirely discretionary, not rights-based. No timeline guarantees exist.
Other Routes to Residency & Citizenship
Citizenship by Descent (Egyptian Parent)
Eligibility
Children born to an Egyptian father acquire Egyptian citizenship at birth automatically, regardless of the country of birth or the mother's nationality. Since the 2004 nationality law reform, Egyptian mothers with non-Egyptian husbands may also transmit citizenship to their children — this is available on application to the Civil Status Authority. 2023 amendments extended transmission rights to foreign women who have been naturalised as Egyptian citizens, subject to restrictions for Arabic-speaking and Muslim-majority country contexts.
Duration / Outcome
Can be claimed at any time by applying at the Civil Status Authority (مصلحة الأحوال المدنية)
Requirements
- ✓Paternal route: Egyptian father's national ID or passport and the child's birth certificate proving the parental link
- ✓Maternal route (2004 reform): Egyptian mother's national ID, child's birth certificate, application to Civil Status Authority
- ✓Naturalised-Egyptian-mother route (2023 amendment): additional documentation required; subject to restrictions
The 2004 law correction to include maternal transmission was a significant reform. In practice the maternal route can involve more administrative steps than the paternal route. Consult the Civil Status Authority or an Egyptian nationality lawyer for cases involving complex parentage, foreign birth registration, or the 2023 amendments.
Citizenship by Investment (GAFI Programme)
Eligibility
Egypt's GAFI (General Authority for Investment and Free Zones) investment-for-citizenship programme remains active in 2026. Four investment routes are available: (1) Non-refundable donation of USD 250,000 to state entities; (2) Real estate purchase valued at USD 300,000 or more with a 5-year hold period; (3) Business investment of at least USD 350,000 plus a USD 100,000 non-refundable donation; (4) Refundable bank deposit of USD 500,000 held for a minimum of 3 years.
Duration / Outcome
Approximately 6 months processing from complete application
Requirements
- ✓Qualifying investment in one of the four GAFI routes (USD 250,000–500,000 depending on category)
- ✓Source-of-funds documentation and compliance with GAFI due diligence requirements
- ✓No serious criminal record
- ✓Medical fitness certificate
- ✓Application to GAFI with supporting financial documentation
The GAFI investment citizenship scheme operates separately from the traditional naturalisation route and does not require the standard 5-year residence period. Processing approximately 6 months from complete submission. The programme introduced enhanced due-diligence verification requirements in 2025 and has processed over 2,500 total applications to date. Confirm current investment thresholds and qualifying conditions directly with GAFI as terms can change.
🌍 Dual Citizenship
✕
Dual citizenship is not allowed — Egypt officially does not recognise dual citizenship for Egyptian nationals. If an Egyptian national acquires foreign citizenship, Egypt technically requires renunciation of Egyptian citizenship — in practice, this is inconsistently enforced. For foreigners naturalising as Egyptians, renunciation of previous citizenship is expected. Many Egyptian-Americans and Egyptian-British nationals hold both passports in practice, but Egyptian law does not formally recognise this. Non-Egyptians who receive Egyptian citizenship through marriage or the investment route may retain their home country passport as Egypt's enforcement of its anti-dual citizenship policy is limited — but this comes with no legal guarantee and the situation should be discussed with an immigration lawyer.
