Gather these before and after moving to Georgia.
Valid passport with sufficient validity for visa/residence processing, banking and regional travel. Many nationalities can enter Georgia visa-free for up to 365 days. Keep colour scans of the photo page and all entry stamps as evidence of stay duration.
Border entry stamp, approved e-visa (eVisa portal at geoconsul.gov.ge) or D-category visa confirmation. Used to verify lawful stay, calculate 365-day or other permitted periods, and support residence and work permit applications at LEPL (Legal Entity of Public Law) immigration offices.
Required for family, school enrolment, marriage registration in Georgia, citizenship and embassy procedures. Georgia is a Hague Apostille member (since 2007); foreign birth certificates from Hague member countries require apostille. Certified Georgian translation required by a sworn translator licensed at the National Bureau of Enforcement.
Required for spouse residence permit applications, school enrolment, joint property registration and inheritance. Apostille from Hague member countries; certified Georgian translation required.
Required for certain residence permit categories, employment in regulated sectors (childcare, security, healthcare), banking and employer compliance. Required for regulated professions (medicine, law, education, engineering), IT-sector residence permits and employer credential checks. Georgia is a Hague Apostille member; apostille and certified Georgian translation required. Recognition of foreign academic degrees is handled by the National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement (NCEQE — naec.ge).
Required for work-based residence permits, Revenue Service of Georgia (tax.gov.ge) tax registration, bank KYC and landlord checks. The contract should be in Georgian or accompanied by a certified Georgian translation.
Required for residence permit applications, lease agreements, bank account opening and property transactions. Georgia's small business tax status (small business: 1% flat tax on turnover up to GEL 500,000) is popular with freelancers and entrepreneurs — income evidence is needed at the Revenue Service.
Address evidence is required for residence permit (temporary or permanent), bank KYC, school enrolment, utility connections and Public Service Hall (sas.gov.ge) procedures. The lease should be registered with the National Agency of Public Registry (nap.gov.ge).
Private health insurance is strongly recommended and sometimes required for school enrolment, employer compliance and certain residence permit categories. Georgia has both public and private healthcare; most expats use private clinics in Tbilisi. Confirm your policy covers emergency evacuation.
Foreign driving licences are valid in Georgia for up to 90 days from entry. For long-term residents, the licence must be exchanged at the LEPL Service Agency (sa.gov.ge) or converted via a driving test if the home country is not on Georgia's exchange agreement list. Georgia drives on the right.
Required for importing cats and dogs into Georgia. Core documents: microchip certificate (ISO 11784/11785), current rabies vaccination record, a veterinary health certificate and an import permit from the National Food Agency (nfa.gov.ge). Confirm current country-specific requirements before travel.
Required for double-taxation treaty claims, Revenue Service of Georgia tax registration, and for entrepreneurs using small business or virtual zone status. US citizens must continue filing US tax returns regardless of Georgia residency. Keep home-country tax return copies, tax clearance letters and proof of prior residency for DTA applications.
