Hong Kong (HK)
Hong Kong is one of the world's most dynamic cities — a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China operating under the 'One Country, Two Systems' framework that preserves its common law legal system, independent judiciary, free port status, and separate currency.
Banking in Hong Kong
Recommended banks, payment culture and credit score basics.
Hong Kong has one of the most sophisticated banking systems in the world — a major global financial centre with over 160 licensed banks and 30+ restricted licence banks. The HKD is pegged to USD at 7.75–7.85 (Linked Exchange Rate System since 1983) providing complete currency stability. FPS (Faster Payment System) enables instant transfers between banks via phone number or HKID number. The banking sector is dominated by HSBC and Hang Seng (Hang Seng is an HSBC subsidiary). Major neobanks (Mox, ZA Bank, Ant Bank HK, Livi Bank) launched 2020–2022 offering fee-free accounts with competitive savings rates. No minimum deposit is required at neobanks.

Payment culture
Hong Kong payment culture: Octopus card for transit and retail (dominant for small transactions). FPS (Faster Payment System) for instant bank transfers — send money by entering the recipient's phone number or HKID number — no account details needed. PayMe by HSBC is the dominant P2P payment app (similar to Venmo/Monzo payments), linked to your bank account. WeChat Pay HK and AlipayHK for mainland-linked transfers and QR code payments in shops. Credit and debit cards widely accepted everywhere except wet markets and small cha chaan tengs. Apple Pay and Google Pay accepted at most terminals. Contactless payments (Octopus, card tap) at virtually every MTR station, shop, and café.
Cash access
ATMs are ubiquitous across HK — in MTR stations, 7-Eleven, banks, shopping malls, and residential estates. HSBC, Hang Seng ATMs free for own bank customers. JETCO network (most local banks) offers interbank ATM access at low or no fee. Citibank ATMs across HK. International withdrawal limits: typically HK$20,000–30,000/day. International cards: beware currency conversion fee of 1.5–3% when using non-HKD cards. Use a fee-free international card (Mox Card, Revolut) for best rates — Wise card and personal account not available to HK residents.
Credit Bureau — TransUnion HK / HKCB
TransUnion Hong Kong (transunion.hk) provides personal credit reports. HKCB Credit Reference Agency (hkcbcra.com.hk) is the banking industry's interbank credit reference system. You can request a credit report from TransUnion HK online for HK$295/report. Check for accuracy before applying for a mortgage or large credit facility.
Free annual check: No free annual credit report in HK (unlike US or Germany). TransUnion charges HK$295 per report. Each bank inquiry leaves a hard inquiry on your report — too many applications in a short period reduces your score.
New arrivals to HK start with no local credit history. This can make it harder to get approved for credit cards, personal loans, and mortgages in the first year. Build your credit history by: using a credit card linked to your primary bank account, paying bills on time, maintaining a stable income proof. HSBC Global Transfers can link your credit history from other HSBC markets to your HK account.
International transfers
FPS (Faster Payment System): instant transfers between HK banks and between HKD and RMB accounts. No transfer fee for most banks. International (SWIFT) transfers: typically HK$100–200 fee per transfer plus exchange margin. Wise personal accounts are not available to Hong Kong residents — only business accounts are offered; use Revolut or a traditional bank for personal international transfers from HK. Western Union available for cash remittances to over 200 countries. HSBC GlobalMoney Transfer: free between HSBC accounts globally. Remittances to Philippines (for FDH employers): BDO, GCash, PNB partner branches in HK offer very competitive rates.
