iAM Smart
iAM Smart (智方便) is Hong Kong's national digital identity platform, launched in 2020. It allows residents to digitally authenticate their identity using their HKID and a smartphone, for accessing government online services without filling in forms repeatedly. iAM Smart+ (the enhanced tier, requiring a chip-enabled HKID card) enables digital signatures for official documents.
How to get it: Register at iamsmart.gov.hk or via the iAM Smart app (iOS/Android). Step 1: Download the iAM Smart app. Step 2: Use your chip-enabled HKID card (held against the back of your NFC-enabled smartphone) to verify identity. Step 3: Set up a 6-digit passcode and biometric login. Step 4: iAM Smart (basic tier) activated. For iAM Smart+ (digital signature capability): visit any designated Post Office or registration centre for in-person verification.
E-Government Portal
https://www.gov.hkHong Kong's e-government services are functional and improving but less integrated than some European systems (e.g. Estonia, Denmark). iAM Smart is the key enabler — set it up in your first week. Many services still require physical attendance (HKID registration, company formation documents). The government's digital transformation agenda (Smart City Blueprint) is accelerating adoption of digital services through 2025–2030.

Octopus
FreeOfficial Octopus app. Check balance, top up Octopus via credit card, view transaction history. Essential companion to your physical Octopus card.
PayMe by HSBC
FreeThe dominant peer-to-peer payment app in HK. Send money to friends by phone number, PayMe ID or QR code. Works across all HK banks (not HSBC only). Equivalent to Venmo/Monzo Pay. Essential for splitting bills and group payments.
WeChat Pay HK
FreeHK version of WeChat Pay. Separate from mainland WeChat Pay. Widely accepted at restaurants, convenience stores. Also useful for communicating with mainland China contacts.
AlipayHK
FreeHK version of Alipay (separate from mainland Alipay). QR code payments at thousands of merchants. Includes bill payment and insurance products.
iAM Smart
FreeHong Kong's national digital identity app. Required for eTax filing, MyGovHK portal, and digital signature of government documents. Set up in your first week.
HKeTax (IRD)

FreeHong Kong's leading e-commerce supermarket. Order groceries, electronics, household items for same-day or next-day delivery. Very popular for supermarket top-ups without carrying heavy bags.
OpenRice
FreeHong Kong's equivalent of Yelp for restaurants. 60,000+ restaurant listings with reviews, menus, photos and reservation links. Also available in English. Essential for finding good food in any district.
YoHo
PaidTelemedicine platform. Video consultations with licensed HK doctors. Prescriptions can be filled for collection. Useful for minor ailments without waiting 3 hours at A&E.
GovHK / MyGovHK
FreeCentral government portal and personalised services hub. File returns, check licensing, pay bills, track application status. Requires iAM Smart for authentication.
Internet speeds in HK are among the fastest in the world — average fixed broadband: 500–1,000 Mbit/s; 5G mobile widely available. Free WiFi in all MTR stations (GovWifi and MTR Free WiFi), major shopping malls, Starbucks, McDonald's, and many cafes. Hong Kong is not subject to China's Great Firewall — all websites, Google, Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp are freely accessible without VPN. Note: when travelling to mainland China, a VPN is required for accessing most Western services — set up before you cross the border.
