Labour Department Job Centres

勞工處就業中心

Walk in to any of the 12 Job Centres across Hong Kong (Wan Chai, Kowloon Bay, Kwun Tong, Sha Tin, Tuen Mun, etc.). Bring your HKID and CV. Register as a job seeker to access the Interactive Employment Service (iES) portal, which lists thousands of local vacancies. No appointment needed.

💼 Work Permits

EU Citizens

EU citizens do NOT have special rights in Hong Kong (HK is not part of any EU framework). All foreign nationals, including EU citizens, require a valid employment visa or other eligible status (QMAS, TTPS, Right of Abode, Dependent Visa with work permission) to work legally in Hong Kong. There is no equivalent of EU free movement.

Non-EU Citizens

Non-EU and non-UK citizens require an Employment Visa (EV) for employment in HK. The visa is employer-sponsored — your employer applies to the Immigration Department on your behalf. You must have a genuine job offer that cannot be filled by a local resident. Processing takes 4–8 weeks typically. Other pathways: QMAS (Quality Migrant Admission Scheme — points-based, no job offer needed), TTPS (Top Talent Pass Scheme — for high earners HK$2.5M+/year or top-100 university graduates).

EU Blue Card

The Top Talent Pass Scheme (TTPS), introduced in October 2022, is the closest equivalent to Germany's EU Blue Card. It offers a 3-year visa to high-earning individuals (annual income of HK$2.5M+ in the preceding year) or graduates of the world's top 100 universities (as ranked by QS, THE, or ARWU) within 3 years of graduation. No job offer is required. TTPS holders can then apply for a 2-year extension based on local employment or business. Over 60,000 TTPS visas were issued between 2022–2025.

Freelancer Visa

Self-employed individuals can apply for a self-employment visa (an Employment Visa with self-employment status). The applicant must demonstrate that the business is viable, that there is a genuine market need, and that the activity will benefit HK economically. Alternatively, sole proprietors can register a business under the Business Registration Ordinance and use that as a basis for an employment visa extension.

⏱️ Work Culture

Typical hours Long working hours are a feature of Hong Kong work culture, particularly in finance, law, and professional services. Standard contract hours: 40–48 hours/week, but actual hours in banking/law: 50–80 hours/week common. The Employment Ordinance does not cap working hours. "Face time" culture (being seen at your desk until the boss leaves) is prevalent in traditional companies but less so in international MNCs and tech firms.

Annual leave Statutory minimum: 7 days annual leave after the first year, rising by 1 day per year of service to 14 days maximum after 9 years. Many professional roles offer 15–25 days. Senior positions may offer more. Annual leave does not include public holidays (17 days in 2026) which are additional for most employees under "general holidays".

Sick leave Sick leave accrues at 2 paid sick days per month, up to a maximum of 36 days (first 4 months) then 2 days per month with no cap on total accrual. Paid sick leave: 4/5 of daily wages from the 4th consecutive sick day. The first 3 days are unpaid (or paid by employer as policy). Doctor's certificate required for paid sick leave.

Trial period Probation period (試用期): typically 1–3 months. During probation, either party can terminate with 1 week's notice (or 1 week's pay in lieu) unless the contract specifies otherwise. Full Employment Ordinance protections (paid sick leave, annual leave, MPF beyond employer statutory minimum) may not apply until after a continuous contract of 4+ consecutive weeks at 18+ hours/week.

Notice period Standard: 1 month notice (or 1 month's salary in lieu of notice). Some senior contracts specify 3 months. Employment Ordinance statutory minimum: 1 month after probation, or agreed period in contract (whichever is longer). Garden leave (paid notice not required to work) is common in finance and legal.

Salary range Wide range by sector. Finance/banking/law: HK$40,000–200,000+/month for professionals. Tech/IT: HK$25,000–80,000+. Marketing/HR: HK$20,000–50,000. Hospitality: HK$15,000–30,000. Statutory minimum wage for general workers: HK$43.1/hour from May 1, 2026 (up from HK$42.1). Fresh graduates: HK$12,000–20,000 typically.

Pay frequency Monthly (末薪). Salary paid at end of calendar month or on a fixed date. 13th month pay is common but not statutory — many companies offer it as year-end bonus.

📝 Application Tips

CV format: CV/résumé in Hong Kong follows an international format: typically 1–2 pages, chronological order, include a professional photo (common in HK, unlike in Europe). Include: contact details, summary, work experience, education, skills, references available on request. In Chinese companies, a Chinese-language CV is a significant advantage. Use both English and Chinese if fluent.

Cover letter: Expected

Language: English is widely used in MNCs, finance, law, and international business. Many roles in local companies, government, and retail require Cantonese. Written Chinese (Traditional Chinese characters) is required for many local administrative roles. Putonghua (Mandarin) is increasingly valued — especially for roles with mainland China exposure. Being trilingual (Cantonese/English/Putonghua) is a major competitive advantage.

Interviews: First rounds often conducted by HR via video or phone. Technical/competency interviews follow for shortlisted candidates. In traditional Cantonese companies, relationship-building before getting to business is important. In MNCs: direct, competency-based interviews similar to Western standards. Multiple rounds are common for senior roles (3–5 interviews). Dressing smartly for interviews is expected — business formal even if the company has a casual dress code day-to-day.
