Maldives (MV)
The Maldives is the world's most geographically dispersed country — a chain of 26 coral atolls and 1,192 islands stretching 900km across the Indian Ocean, of which only about 185 are inhabited.
Digital Services
Digital ID, e-government and essential apps in Maldives.
Maldives eID (Electronic Identity)
The Maldivian national ID card (Dhiniyaa Kaaridu) for citizens with an electronic chip. Non-citizens do not receive a national eID — foreign residents use their passport and work visa as primary ID documents. A digital version of the Residence Card (for long-term foreign residents) is being piloted.
How to get it: Maldivian citizens register at NCIT. Foreign workers register at the Department of Immigration for their Residence Card. Not applicable in the same form as German Personalausweis for non-nationals.
E-Government Portal
https://egov.mvThe Maldives e-government portal (egov.mv) consolidates many services. Some services require a Maldivian ID number (for citizens) and are inaccessible to foreign nationals. For expat-relevant services, MIRA tax portal and Immigration Services portal are the most important. English language support is available on key portals but some services are Dhivehi-only. Mobile-first design is increasingly common — most services work well on smartphones.

4G connectivity is excellent in Malé and Hulhumalé. Outer atoll coverage varies — most resort islands have functional 4G via satellite backhaul or dedicated links but speeds can be inconsistent. Download offline copies of important documents, maps, and contacts before travelling to remote atolls. WhatsApp video calling works well on Dhiraagu 4G and is the standard for remote work communications. The Maldives adopted a Digital Economy Policy in 2024 aimed at improving e-government services and fintech — expect continued improvement in digital services through 2026.
