Permanent Residency
Name
Permanent Residence
Eligibility
Available in 2026 through routes such as retirement/economic solvency, family unity, points/regularisation, recognised refuge/asylum channels, Mexican-child links, or after qualifying temporary residence. Consular practice varies and retirees often use permanent residence directly where eligible, but one consulate may ask for different bank, pension or investment evidence than another. People changing from temporary to permanent should check timing before the temporary card expires.
Duration
Indefinite card, but address, civil status, nationality, employer, passport replacement and card replacement updates still matter.
Requirements
- โPassport
- โConsular visa or INM route
- โFinancial/family/temporary-residence evidence
- โFMM/FMMd and canje documents where applicable
- โProof of address where requested
- โCivil documents apostilled/legalised and translated where relevant
- โFees, photos and forms
- โPrior resident cards and old passports if changing category or replacing documents
Permanent residence is residence status, not citizenship. It usually removes annual renewal but not tax, RFC, address, employer, civil-status or travel-document obligations. Permanent residents should still keep CURP/RFC records aligned with passport updates and should not assume Mexican tax residence is avoided simply because income comes from abroad. For 2026 planning, retirees should keep pension letters, bank statements and insurance records even after obtaining the indefinite card because banks, insurers, notaries and foreign pension agencies may still ask for them.
๐ชช
Citizenship
Name
Mexican citizenship by naturalisation
Eligibility
Standard: 5 years of continuous legal residence in Mexico. Reduced to 2 years for: spouses of Mexican citizens with documented cohabitation (2yr countdown begins from spousal residency grant date); nationals of Latin American countries, Spain, Portugal, or Andorra; parents of Mexican-born children. Must demonstrate conversational Spanish proficiency and pass a Mexican history and culture exam.
Duration
Multi-month to multi-year process after eligibility, depending on SRE appointments, exam timing, document completeness, and background checks.
Requirements
- โ5 years of continuous legal residence (standard) OR 2 years for qualifying categories
- โPermanent resident card (tarjeta de residente permanente) or valid temporary residence
- โConversational Spanish proficiency (assessed in SRE interview)
- โMexican history and culture exam (Examen de Conocimientos): 10 questions; minimum 8 correct to pass; exempt for applicants aged 60 or over
- โBirth certificate (apostilled/legalised and translated)
- โPassport and all previous passports covering the entire residence period
- โProof of continuous residence and absences (entry/exit stamps, CURP, tax/RFC records)
- โClean criminal record (Mexico and home country; apostilled and translated)
- โMarriage/birth documents for family-based routes
- โSRE fee: approximately MXN 8,755 (from January 2025; adjusted annually based on UMA value โ verify current figure at gob.mx/sre)
- โSRE file submission and processing (~3 months after INM opinion)
Naturalisation requires physical presence and has absence limits โ any long trips during the qualifying period can jeopardise eligibility. Get advice before long absences, name changes, divorce, or passport renewal. The practical bottleneck is the document chain: apostilles, perito (sworn) translations, consistent CURP/RFC spelling, and surname consistency across all documents. Keep a travel log from day one if citizenship is a serious goal.
Other Routes to Residency & Citizenship
Citizenship by birth
Eligibility
Children born in Mexico generally acquire Mexican nationality.
Duration / Outcome
At birth/registration
Requirements
- โMexican birth certificate
- โParents documents
- โHospital birth record
- โInterpreter or translated parent documents if required locally
Parents should also handle foreign consular birth registration where applicable. Check name order before signing the civil registry record because later corrections can be slow and travel-disruptive.
Citizenship by descent
Eligibility
Children of Mexican citizens born abroad may be registered as Mexican.
Duration / Outcome
By registration
Requirements
- โMexican parent documents
- โForeign birth certificate
- โApostille/legalisation and translation where required
- โParent marriage/name-change documents if relevant
Name order and accent/spelling consistency matter. Families should compare Mexican, foreign and airline passport naming before booking travel.
Naturalisation through Mexican spouse or child
Eligibility
Spouses of Mexican citizens and parents of Mexican children may have shorter residence routes when requirements are met.
Duration / Outcome
After required residence period and SRE process
Requirements
- โMarriage or birth certificate
- โProof of Mexican nationality of spouse/child
- โResident card
- โProof of cohabitation/family link where requested
- โGood conduct and SRE documents
Do not assume marriage alone gives citizenship. Residence, absences, document age, translations and marital status must still be clean.
Latin American / Iberian nationality route (2-year)
Eligibility
Nationals of all Latin American countries, Spain, Portugal, and Andorra qualify for citizenship after only 2 years of continuous legal residence in Mexico โ versus the standard 5 years.
Duration / Outcome
2yr residence + SRE process (~3 months)
Requirements
- โValid passport from a qualifying country (all Latin American nations, Spain, Portugal, or Andorra)
- โResident card
- โBirth certificate (apostilled + sworn Spanish translation)
- โSame exams and documentary requirements as standard route
- โSRE fee approximately MXN 8,755 (2025 rate)
The 2-year path makes Mexico one of the fastest citizenship routes for Latin Americans. Verify your country is on the qualifying list at gob.mx/sre before relying on the shorter timeline.
๐ Dual Citizenship
โ
Dual citizenship is allowed โ Mexico allows dual nationality, but naturalising foreigners must check home-country rules. Mexican nationals in Mexico are generally treated as Mexican by Mexican authorities. Dual nationals should enter and leave Mexico with Mexican documents once Mexican, while preserving foreign passport validity for the other country.
