Family support combines employment leave, Inland Revenue tax credits, Work and Income assistance, public healthcare eligibility, early childhood education, school zoning, and immigration status. Families should treat IRD, SmartStart, Work and Income, GP enrolment, school enrolment, and visa conditions as one linked admin package rather than separate tasks.
Primary carer leave
Before birth: Pregnant employees can start primary carer leave up to 6 weeks before the expected due date, earlier in some medical or employer-agreed situations.
After birth: Primary carer leave: 26 weeks of government-paid Parental Leave Payments (PPL) via Inland Revenue, capped at NZ$788.66 gross/week (1 July 2025–30 June 2026; indexed annually). Plus up to 26 weeks of extended unpaid leave (job-protected). Total maximum job-protected leave: 52 weeks. Paid parental leave, job-protected unpaid leave, employer top-ups, and partner leave are separate entitlements — PPL is paid directly by Inland Revenue, not by the employer.
Job protection: Eligible employees have job-protected parental leave rights and protection from discrimination. Employers should not disadvantage workers because of pregnancy, breastfeeding, parental leave, or family responsibilities.
Parental leave
Max duration: Up to 52 weeks extended leave for eligible parents; paid parental leave length and rates should be checked for the current year. Self-employed people can qualify under separate tests.
Split rules / Elterngeld: Leave may be shared or transferred between eligible primary carers/partners under detailed rules. Couples should plan handover dates, employer notice, daycare start, and visa/work-right limits together.

Sick child leave
Sick leave can be used to care for a spouse/partner, dependent child, or dependent person. Parents should also check employer policies for domestic leave, flexible work, unpaid leave, school closure, and emergency care.
Birth registration
Births in New Zealand must be registered with the Department of Internal Affairs, usually online. SmartStart can connect birth registration, IRD number, Best Start, paid parental leave, and other early-childhood tasks.
Childcare rights
Children can attend early learning from birth until age 6; many 3-5 year olds can use 20 Hours ECE at participating services. Waitlists, fees, food policies, teacher ratios, hours, holiday closures, and subsidy participation vary, so families should compare the actual weekly bill rather than headline rates.
