Public Transport Overview

Public transport is city-based rather than national. Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch have the best networks, but many suburbs still work better with a car.

Cycling infrastructure is improving but uneven. Wellington is hilly and windy; Christchurch is flatter and better suited to daily cycling.

Intercity Trains

Passenger rail is scenic but limited. InterCity buses and domestic flights are usually more practical for long-distance travel.

Driving

Drive on the left. Speed limits: 50 km/h in urban areas, 100 km/h on open roads. Note: blanket 80 km/h reductions applied under a previous Road to Zero programme are being reversed back to 100 km/h from July 2025 — check current signage on specific roads. Rural roads are narrow and winding, and travel times are often longer than maps imply.

Airports

Auckland is the main long-haul gateway. Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown, and Dunedin handle domestic and selected international routes.
