👶 Childcare & Kindergarten

Age: 3 months–5 years

No federal or state childcare subsidy programme for private nurseries. Expat employer packages often include a school/childcare allowance — confirm with HR before accepting a posting. Some multinational compounds provide on-site crèche facilities.

Visit the nursery in person to assess facilities. Submit health records, vaccination evidence (NPHCDA card), parent IDs, and pay a registration deposit. Most quality nurseries require a trial settling-in period.

⏱️ In Lagos and Abuja, quality nurseries in expat-heavy areas (Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Lekki, Maitama) fill quickly. Inspect generator cover, water supply, security, staff-to-child ratio, and road-commute implications before choosing. Apply 3–6 months ahead.

Public and private primary school Free

Primary school

Ages: 5/6–11 (Primary 1–6) · Language: English is the formal medium in all accredited schools; Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo are used alongside English in some public schools in their respective regions

Public schools: enrol through the Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) of the child's residential local government area. Bring birth certificate, vaccination card, proof of residence. Foreign children should also provide passport and valid residency documentation. Expat families almost universally choose private or international schools.

The Universal Basic Education (UBE) programme, administered by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), mandates free and compulsory 9-year basic education covering 6 years of primary and 3 years of junior secondary. Quality in public schools varies significantly by state and local government. A May 2026 government proposal to restructure into a 12-year basic education model (scrapping the JSS/SSS labels) was under discussion — confirm current implementation status.

Junior and senior secondary school Free

Secondary school (JSS / SSS)

Ages: 11–17/18 (JSS 1–3 then SSS 1–3) · Language: English

For public schools: apply through the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) for JSS or the state ministry of education for SSS. Bring primary school leaving certificate, birth certificate, and proof of residence. Private and international school admission requires entrance tests, transcripts, and application forms.

Junior Secondary School (JSS, grades 7–9) is covered by the free UBE mandate. Senior Secondary School (SSS, grades 10–12) is technically not part of the federal free mandate, though many states provide it at low or no cost in public schools. Private schools charge fees at both levels. The senior secondary cycle ends with WAEC/NECO examinations. British IGCSE and A Level, American AP, and IB tracks are available at private and international schools in Lagos and Abuja. A 2026 government proposal would merge JSS and SSS into a single 12-year basic education track — monitor for implementation.

International Schools

Lagos and Abuja have a substantial international school sector. Lagos: American International School of Lagos (AISL), British International School Lagos, Grange School (British curriculum), Corona Schools, Lagos Preparatory School, Sovereign International College. Abuja: American International School Abuja, British International School Abuja, Lycée Français René Descartes (French curriculum). Annual fees range from USD 8,000 to USD 30,000+ per year. Budget separately for capital/debenture fees (sometimes USD 10,000–25,000 one-off), security transport, uniform, and development levies. Confirm security escort arrangements, generator cover, and air-conditioning reliability before committing. Port Harcourt has additional options for oil-industry families.

University

Tuition fee

Federal and state public universities charge relatively low fees for Nigerian students (NGN 30,000–300,000/year depending on state and institution). Private universities range from NGN 500,000 to NGN 5,000,000+ per year. The most internationally recognised institutions include University of Lagos (UNILAG), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), University of Ibadan, Covenant University, and American University of Nigeria (AUN) in Yola.

Semester fee

Institution-dependent. Private universities charge semester fees covering lab, library, IT, and accommodation facilitation. Public university semester charges are minimal. No semester transport-ticket system exists.

Student visa

Foreign students must obtain an appropriate student visa or residency endorsement before enrolling. Apply at a Nigerian embassy or high commission with the institution's admission letter, proof of funds, and medical documents. Renew residency permits and CERPAC as required. Do not study long-term on a short-visit visa.

Health insurance

Private health insurance through a Nigerian HMO (Health Maintenance Organisation) or international medical insurance is strongly recommended. University clinics provide limited cover. Medical evacuation insurance is important given the quality ceiling of in-country care for serious conditions.

Application process

Most Nigerian universities require a JAMB UTME (Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination) score as a prerequisite. Foreign students may be exempted from JAMB for direct-entry or special-admission routes — confirm with each institution. Apply directly to the university with academic transcripts, O Level/A Level results (WAEC/NECO or foreign equivalents), passport, visa, and photographs. Credential recognition may be required for non-Nigerian secondary certificates.

No mandatory language integration programme exists for foreign residents.
